Netley Abbey, sometimes referred to as Netley, is a village on the south coast of Hampshire, England. It is situated on the east side of the city of Southampton. It is flanked on the one side by the ruins of Netley Abbey and on the other by the Royal Victoria Country Park, which is the site of the old Royal Victoria Military Hospital (or Netley Hospital); built after the Crimean War, and used extensively from 1863 through to World War II. In fact it continued to be used as a military hospital until its closure in 1979 when it was converted into a country park. It is located in the Parish of Hound, an area which also covers Butlocks Heath and Old Netley.

Away from the shore, larger estates of houses have developed over the years which have greatly increased Netley's population and blurred the boundary between Netley Abbey and Butlocks Heath, but the village still retains the feel of a small community. There were two schools linked to each other, called Netley Abbey Infant School and Netley Abbey & Butlocks Heath County Junior School; extensive building occurred onsite at the junior school in the late 1980s and the site now provides a Primary School for the village. There are a handful of churches, including the Parish Church of St Edward The Confessor.

Netley, officially Netley Abbey, is a village on the south coast of Hampshire, England. It is situated to the south-east of the city of Southampton, and flanked on one side by the ruins of Netley Abbey and on the other by the Royal Victoria Country Park.

Historical development[edit]

As late as 1800, Netley consisted of little other than the ruins of the Abbey, and two villas known as Netley Castle and Netley Lodge.[1] Development of the village expanded after the founding of the old Royal Victoria Military Hospital (or Netley Hospital) in 1856,[1] in connection with the Crimean War. The hospital was used extensively from 1863 through World War II until its closure in 1979 when it was converted into a country park.

Earlier, the abbey ruins made Netley a popular excursion from Southampton - both Cassandra Austen and her sister Jane planning excursions there, for example, when staying in the town in 1808.[2]

Present-day[edit]

The oldest part of Netley retains the feel of a somewhat old-fashioned and quaint village, with some traditional small shops, a post office, a library and rows of colourful terraced cottages. It is located along the eastern shore of Southampton Water; the shingle beach looks across to Hythe and Fawley, although the vista is somewhat dominated by Fawley Oil Refinery.

Away from the shore, larger estates of houses have developed over the years which have greatly increased Netley's population and blurred the boundary between Netley Abbey and Butlocks Heath. There were two schools linked to each other, called Netley Abbey Infant School and Netley Abbey & Butlocks Heath County Junior School; there was extensive building on the site of the junior school in the late 1980s, and the site now provides a primary school for the village. There are a handful of churches, including the parish church of St Edward the Confessor. It was completed 1886 and contains a partial effigy of a knight taken from Netley Abbey.[3] The church was originally designed by J. D. Sedding.[3]

There is a pub 'The Prince Consort' in a Victorian building that was previously a hotel.[3]

Transport[edit]

Road[edit]

Netley has three main roads in and out of it. It is a short distance from the M27.

Rail[edit]

Netley Railway Station has hourly services to Southampton Central and Portsmouth Harbour via the train company South Western Railway, providing links for commuters both in and out of the village.

Bus[edit]

Bluestar operate a half-hourly bus service to Southampton via Woolston and Hamble, numbered '15'. Netley is also linked to Hedge End by Stagecoach South's '49h'. Netley also has multiple school and college bus routes.

Cycling[edit]

National Cycle Network route 2 passes through Netley, on its way from Dover to St Austell.

Weston Sailing Club[edit]

Weston Sailing Club is in Netley, at Abbey Hill on Weston Shore.[4] The club was founded in 1952 but originally located in Weston.[4] In 1968 the club was granted land at Abbey Hill, and built a clubhouse there.[4]
