Pedantry

I have been reading the article College Town and on the talk page I came across a discussion over whether college town should be the correct term as some may technically be cities or villages. I stated there that 'college town; is the term in common use and that in my opinion it is the job of an encyclopedia to state what is in common use and not what should be in common use. I'm sure these examples of pedantry are fairly common on wikipedia but didn't find anything in the content guidelines about this. Does wikipedia have an official line on pedantry and should it have one? --82.71.201.5 (talk) 09:03, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think there is a policy on pedantry but decisions are governed by consensus. Also redirects work great in situations like that. GtstrickyTalk or C 17:24, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This article has been under attack for the past thirty minutes. It seems the user is switching computers to not use up the same IP, since the vandalism says the exact same thing on each edit. I don't know which IP to report, and I am afraid of violating the 3RR rule. Help? -- Mr. E. Sánchez Wanna know my story?/ Share yours with me! 02:42, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You might want to request protection at WP:RFPP. And 3RR does not apply to reverting vandalism. Calvin 1998 (t-c) 02:51, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Two questions about Richard Krawiec article:

1) With the link from Yao Ming and the many links outward, is it ok now to take off the orphan template? 2) I'm wondering if I should put a pov template on it, per my comments on the talk page about it sounding like a resume. Thanks, 130.86.14.82 (talk) 00:28, 15 July 2008 (UTC)Rich (talk) 00:58, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

They're still no articles linking to Richard Krawiec, so no, it wouldn't be appropriate to remove orphan. Algebraist 00:35, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
• I just reinserted link from Yao Ming article. Rich (talk) 01:01, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure about the orphan tag, but the article needs some work as far as references are concerned. I have moved what were listed as references to the external links section (because they were not linked to statements in the text) and bulleted all those links. The references will need to be looked at to see which ones can be added "in-line" using the tags. – ukexpat (talk) 00:39, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
thanks for doing that.Rich (talk) 18:33, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sockpuppet question

I'm looking into some apparent sock puppet activity by a user who has been suspected of using socks in the past. The current case says: Wikipedia:Suspected sock puppets/XXX (2nd nomination) but I'm wondering where the history of the (1st nomination) is located. Mrshaba (talk) 02:42, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It should be at Wikipedia:Suspected sock puppets/XXX without a number. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:49, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That's what I figured but it's not working. Mrshaba (talk) 03:05, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Then you may have to say what XXX is if you want help. PrimeHunter (talk) 03:22, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That makes sense. XXX Mrshaba (talk) 03:26, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The creator made it with "(2nd nomination)" in the title and then expressed surprise at that.[1] It sounds like it was an error and there is no other page. PrimeHunter (talk) 03:34, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I just talked to NJGW who created the page and I think he was surprised because he didn't intend to create the page as a second nomination. Can you do that? If I go and make a page on XXX I figure it will pop up (3rd nomination) because there's an automatic protocol built into the system that keeps track of things. I still don't understand why the system isn't kicking out the first nomination though? Can these histories be toyed with? Mrshaba (talk) 03:59, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If you create the page manually then you can call it anything and I don't think there is an automatic protocol. But it appears from the edit summary of NJGW that the page was created with Twinkle. I don't have Twinkle and don't know how it selects the page name. This is pure speculation but maybe NJGW chose a wrong Twinkle function which creates the page with "(2nd nomination)" without checking whether a 1st nomination exists - or maybe there was a Twinkle error. If you create a new page then I suggest calling it "(3rd)" (omitting "nomination" is recommended), and explaining on the page that there probably is no 1st. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:00, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the info on this confusing situation. Mrshaba (talk) 16:55, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to format this article so the "See also" section occurs below the image of the mine in 1910. I have seen this done, but don't recall the code. How do I do this? Thx. --Blechnic (talk) 02:45, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just move the image up, for example to just before a text paragraph you want displayed next to the image. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:53, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Done - Simply place clear where you want a separation (click the link for details). I've done it for you. If you do want an image to be included in the See also section, just move it there. Calvin 1998 (t-c) 03:19, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Looking for a third party

Hi. I'm reasonably new to Wiikipedia and have been editing an article Fire pit because it read like a sales pitch about selling fire pits for the garden. However, I don't know a huge amount about garden-fire-pits, and whilst I've put some information in about fire pits in history, it seems like it's lacking a bit now. Can anyone help me improve the article without it being too short OR an advert for fire pits?

Thanks! Oldandfat (talk) 12:59, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Try using a tag on the page to request help, maybe expert. GtstrickyTalk or C 17:20, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You should sign your comments on Talk:Fire pit#Things. See Help:Talk page. --Teratornis (talk) 19:50, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If your interest is about garden fire pits, maybe someone at Wikipedia:WikiProject Horticulture and Gardening can help. However, judging from that WikiProject's page, it doesn't look like they are very far along yet (for an example of a mature WikiProject, see Wikipedia:WikiProject Mathematics). To search for scholarly sources, you can try Google scholar cite:

A couple of things to note -- you should not be creating or editing articles about yourself because of your conflict of interest, and also it is not "your" article.  – ukexpat (talk) 14:29, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Moving to an already existent page

How do I move LaSalle Bank Theatre's page to Bank of America Theatre's page? The Theatre is under new corporate sponsorship and therefore LaSalle Bank Theatre no longer exists. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Kimberlyhobart (talkcontribs) 15:29, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

See WP:MOVE for instructions:

How to Note that on many wikis you have to be logged in, and there may be a set length of time that you will have to have had an account for (often four days).

With the correct page displayed, click on the "Move" tab near the top of the page (in default Monobook skin). You'll be asked for a new name for the page, and given the option to also move the page's talk page. NOTE: Unless you know what you're doing, it's safest to say yes. As of MediaWiki 1.5, the reason for the move can be given, like an edit summary.

Click the move button and the page will be renamed to the new title. The old title will become a redirect page, so any links to the old title will still go to the new page. However, note that double redirects (pages that redirect to the original page), will not automatically follow to the new page, so you will have to refer them manually (as explained at How to fix a double redirect and Checking for double redirects.)

1. after a successful page move, a page looking like this will be shown: MediaWiki:Movepage-moved;
2. Open the what-links-here for that page (there may be a shortcut link on the page-moved summary screen to let you do this, but the what-links-here link will in any case be in the toolbox, which is near the bottom of the sidebar unless you've customized your skin away from the default Monobook);
3. Open all redirect pages that are indented in the list, and make them redirect to the page you moved to (that is, without intermediate step);
4. If there are more than 50 pages listed on the "what links here" page, don't forget to navigate to all parts of the list using the "next 50" or other links available.

GtstrickyTalk or C 17:16, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It has already been moved to Bank of America Theatre. --—— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 17:26, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

PICUM title

When I tried to create a page, a message came up that I cannot use the title PICUM for a page because it is on a blacklist. I don't really understand why, and can I change this? PICUM is a non-governmental organisation based in Brussels and we would like to create a page for it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by PICUM (talkcontribs) 15:34, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What is the exact name of the page you tried to create? I don't see a problem with the names PICUM or Picum. Are you sure the message was not about a blacklisted external link on the page you tried to create? There are problems with you creating an article about your own organization. See Wikipedia:FAQ/Business (also applies to organizations), Wikipedia:Conflict of interest, and Wikipedia:Username policy#Company/group names. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:51, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
PICUM is protected, see [2]; Picum is not, [3]. – ukexpat (talk) 15:54, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK. I didn't get any message for PICUM on my admin account like I have gotten for other protected titles and I couldn't find any log for PICUM. The problem is apparently that it matches a regexp protection at MediaWiki:Titleblacklist on page names containing "CUM". Some vandals create or move pages with dirty words in the name. I will look into it. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:10, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I have created a stub at PICUM with my administrator account. Other accounts should be able to edit the page - but it may be deleted soon because I didn't add independent sources. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:43, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The page has now been deleted. If you want to write an article about PICUM, first construct it in your own sandbox (eg. here - User:PICUM/Sandbox ) and then ask an administrator to create the article with this content on. - tholly --Turnip-- 18:25, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Like google needs free advertising. Also, see number 9 on this list, which basically states don't add links to search engine results. DaRkAgE7[Talk] 17:08, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sometimes links are added to Wikimedia Commons (here), which is a repository of free content images. Often these images are more topical too, as they have been uploaded by users. To add this type of link, add SUBJECT OR TOPIC. Just check that related images exist first, by saving the page as a preview, and then following the link. - tholly --Turnip-- 17:50, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Changing PNG to SVG in an article

I originally posted this here but was advised to post it again, here. So, here goes:

The above is a favourite hobby of mine on Wikipedia and is usually fairly straightforward (just editing the image link in the article, so long as an SVG exists). However, with this page the PNG seems to be embedded in some template - runic, I think - but I can't make head nor tail of Template:runic. How do I change the PNG contained within to an SVG? Thanks in advance.

Edit: the PNG in the article is now an SVG but I'm still none the wiser as to who made the change or how they did it. Could someone please explain how to change PNGs in similar pages? It Is Me Here (talk) 17:41, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The .svg image in the table on the right of the article comes from here, a template created for the article. User:Leolaursen edited this template on 14 July to make the picture a .svg. See this difference for how they did it. To find a template like this, look on the main article page and you will see something like this at at the top: EXAPMLE infobox. The just type in Template:EXAMPLE infobox to the search box to see the template.
Does this help? - tholly --Turnip-- 18:00, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No, you'll have to create a new account. You can redirect your old user pages to your new ones if you want. I've removed your email addresses (posting them here is asking to get spammed). Algebraist 18:18, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
(ec) You could also asked to be renamed after you have made several edits with your new account. I don't know whether it would be accepted, but it could be as "Meerkat" has made less than 20 edits, the most recent in 2004. - tholly --Turnip-- 18:21, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Marchand de Bien

Dear Wikipedia People.

My user name is Yambry, and a few days ago I wrote a small article relating the role of a 'Marchand de Bien' in France. It looks great on my page..........but that is as far as it has ever gone. When I search under 'Marchand de Bien'.....nothing.

Any ideas?

You edited your user page with some content about Marchand de Bien. See: User:Yambry. You seem to be trying to create a new article. You can be bold ("L'audace, l'audace, toujours l'audace!") if you like, but be aware that Wikipedia has some rather unintuitive policies and guidelines, and thus new users who create new articles before reading lots of our friendly manuals often end up asking: Why was my article deleted? A gentler way to approach Wikipedia is to start by editing existing articles. You may wish to see:

Lupin's tool

I've been around Wikipedia for a while now, and have had Lupin's tool installed but have never really used it due to errors it caused on my PC. Recently I have tried using the "edit history stats" tool to see who's made the most edits to a certain article, and my name does not appear on the list despite the fact that I have made many edits to the article. I should be about #3 on the list, but I am not shown there. Does anyone know what might be wrong? Thanks, —Mizu onna sango15/Discuss 20:52, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Java classes

I notice that there are a lot features that are not supported in Wikipedia's MediaWiki:Common.js, which occasionally make it difficult to create certain templates. Is it possible to create your own Java classes? ChyranandChloe (talk) 03:41, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nope, for security reasons. And do you mean Java or JavaScript? Calvin 1998 (t-c) 05:17, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know what you mean "for security reasons". Not a single part of Wikipedia runs on Java, so its "nope, for technical reasons". You can write your own JavaScript scripts and include them in your personal monobook.js (or 'theme-of-choice'.js), but that JavaScript will only excute for you and no one else. -- ShinmaWa(talk) 18:31, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That was my point: If you mean Java, than the MediaWiki is incapable of handling it (it's web-based, and you can't run applets on it. Mediawiki:Common.js is JavaScript, not Java). If you mean JavaScript, it could be, but is disabled due to the fact that well written malicious JavaScript could compromise your account, destroy the wiki within seconds, etc. etc. etc. etc. if it ran automatically for all users. So any JavaScript you write will only work for the users who have that code in their .js file. Calvin 1998 (t-c) 19:34, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I forgot to specify that it was Java Script. Thanks for the insight, I knew that there was some was security issues involved. What is the proposal process that needs to done before a JS class can be moved into the MediaWiki:Common.js. ChyranandChloe (talk) 02:50, 17 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm... 1.) There has to be a good reason 2.)I suppose you could ask at the technical village pump, unless someone here knows... Calvin 1998 (t-c) 03:29, 17 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That sounds like the best place, I would agree. On a side note, Java and JavaScript are essentially unrelated, despite the name (you can blame Sun Microsystems for this particular piece of confusing nomenclature!) If only we could persuade everyone to use the "new" name ECMAScript, life would be that much less mixed-up! I presume your proposed additions relate to the Main Page redesign? --tiny plastic Grey Knight 07:11, 17 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, the main purpose right now is the for the 2008 main page redesign proposal. I also see some potential in adding a few more features to the MediaWiki:Common.js such as: tabs, screen.width detection, more options to the show/hide feature, and so on. In fact, we really don't need to program most of these; just snatch them off the other Wikipedias. I think this is resolved, thanks guys. ChyranandChloe (talk) 02:30, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Using episode list template

I'm having a bit of trouble with the "Episode list" template that I created (Template:Episode list/All Saints). I have been using it in the transclusion of stuff from All Saints (season 11) to List of All Saints episodes. I want to add an 'Audience' column to the episode table at All Saints (season 11) but I dont want it to show up on the table at List of All Saints episodes (under season 11). I've tried a few things but I cant get it to work. Can someone please help? Davido321 (talk) 05:12, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I believe it's fixed, now. The column existed on both All Saints (season 11) and List of All Saints episodes, but was only fed data on the former. By adding another parser function, the column will only be displayed on the first page. I encourage you to double check my work, though. – Luna Santin (talk) 07:20, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Navigation templates

Is there a guideline stating that navigation templates should be attached only to articles that are included in the template? --Geronimo20 (talk) 08:36, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

May I restate this: Is it okay to attach a navigation template to an article which is not included in the template, such as the template placed at the bottom of this article. --Geronimo20 (talk) 13:47, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If no-one here is sure of the answer, where else might I ask? --Geronimo20 (talk) 22:30, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It seems very relevant, and even though the article isn't in that template, it is in the identically named WikiProject. I'd say go with common sense over the possibility of illogical rules, but I'd assume the members of that project would be the ones to ask. Someguy1221 (talk) 22:47, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Is it wise for me to make an account?

I've been using this site for a while now, initially for research purposes, but more recently I have begun making the occasional anonymous edit. I was thinking about creating an account, but I don’t really see the benefit of doing so, and now I have read something on user:barneca’s talk page which has kinda put me off making an account. The user says "Although I think I’m a very low-value target for Hivemind-type people (I don’t really do controversy much), I’ve simply been too careless, and left too many clues to my real life identity sprinkled around the internet, and have no desire to risk being put thru what others have been put thru recently." What do they mean "risk being put thru what others have been put thru recently"??? I would like to know what this user means before I think about making an account. Cheers. 79.75.221.97 (talk) 12:49, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

An account at base is more anonymous than editing under your ip address. Ip addresses can be traced to internet service providers and to geologic locations and in some cases to the actual computer being used. An account shields you from this type of tracing by the general public. Of course, if you post a profile and include volunteered personal information, then that can lead to somneone finding out your real identity. I don't know what happened to Barneca, but I can tell you that there are a number of websites dedicated to finding out the real identities of Wikipedia administrators they dislike and smearing them. The quote shows by admission that it was the posting of details and clues about himself/herself that led to whatever vulnerability was exploited. If you don't do that, you won't leave yourself exposed.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 12:55, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

(edit conflict)Putting security concerns aside, there are a lot of other benefits to creating an account. An account allows you to create articles, upload images, and move pages. You can also set up a watchlist to track changes to pages you're interested in. See here for more info. Cheers! TNX-Man 13:12, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
(EC)Fuhghettaboutit is correct. Creating an account will likely be more private unless you reveal personal information about yourself. Along with that there are numerous other benefits: The ability to carry on protracted conversations, the ability to watchlist pages, and the ability to track your own contributions. After 4 days and 10 edits under the account (both requirements must be satisfied), you will gain access to additional resources such as the ability to move pages if necessary, and after a while, with enough edits you are able to vote in board and committee elections as well as other important things (the edit and time requirements for these vary between individual applications).--Oni Ookami AlfadorTalk|@ 13:16, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. I don't really think you need to worry about the issues mentioned on Barneca's usertalkpage. The thing is, a select few high-profile users and administrators are harrased by off-wiki projects (like ED, WR, and 4C). The "Hivemind" that she talks about is sort of like an attack site by wikipedia review (which I'm not allowed to link to). Simply creating an account does not put you at risk for such problems, as long as you don't leave your personal information all over the Internet. More than likely you won't have to deal with the kinds of "things" that people are talking about here, as most of those things are experienced by very high-profile users, and most attacks that vandals sometimes make are relatively minor and can be resolved quickly. my question has to do with world war two equipment lists, should these be posted or not? for instance, if you look up a "SCR-584 radar" it stands to reason that there is an scr-1 through scr-583 ect. most of these are radios. each one you could write a page on, some of these sets had a vehicle made just for them. which is a hole nuther list. and of coures each vehicle had a mfgr, which is a hole nuther list. the cross refrenceing would be nice, but?

I would not assume that each model had been actually fielded. Some may have never gotten off the drawing board, some may have never been developed or the nomenclature system could have changed in midstream. --—— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 23:06, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

most of these lists already exhist on other sites but there "dumb" lists. another words thay dont click to other items, bottom line, I dont want to spent 5,000 houres doing the data entry only to have it deleted, becouse its not an "article"

If there's no more information on each of the models than the fact that they were made during WWII, it would be enough to just link to the other-site lists from some appropriate article. Someguy1221 (talk) 23:27, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
On a side note, there are actually some computer programs (called "bots") owned by some of our users which can take care of laborious tasks like that if it ever comes up. I agree with User:Someguy1221 that there might not be enough information available to get more than a link out of it though. Maybe you could write an article about the series as a whole? Like the Signal Corps Radio, which in fact I see you've already started! :-) Any really notable ones in the series (like the SCR-584) can be mentioned individually and linked, presumably there are only a few such. --tiny plastic Grey Knight 07:02, 17 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

as you can see, going accross a row, you could give each item a link, truck, 4x4, mfgr, on accross to assos. equipment. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Brian in denver (talkcontribs) 15:19, 17 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It seems there's been a fresh wave of protests from the Koreans recently, which I assume is what prompted this little tirade, to which I respond - please be civil, and remember that when you're passionate about something it's often hard to realise that your own point of view isn't necessarily the neutral point of view. Without your password, and if you didn't provide an email address, it's basically "tough" - we have no way of knowing whether you are the original User:Goiken or someone trying to take their account. There is no way whatsoever to disable the capchas - we really do not want it to be possible for accounts to be opened by a brute-force bot; that's why the capchas are there in the first place. USER page in google search results

How do i get my user page to not list in the search results, under my actual contributed page. I thought the user page was where i was suppose to mock stuff up. I see I apparently got it wrong. how do i remedy? Lrothstein (talk) 20:58, 17 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Firstly, your user page is a place where you can talk about yourself, say what you want about anything, basically anything you want that isn't offensive and follows the rules. To display your user page, you have to make one first. Type in "User:Lrothstein" in the search box, and click "Start the User:Lrothstein page". In the big white box, type whatever you want to display in your user page, and hit "Save page". Now your user page will show up instead of your contributions. Hope that helps. This may also help you, Due to the fact that Wikipedia content is licensed under the GFDL, all edits must be kept for attribution purposes, and so your account cannot be deleted. You do, however, have the right to vanish, which you can exercise by (1) requesting your user page (found at Special:Mypage) and/or user talk page (found at Special:Mytalk) be deleted, by adding the db-userreq template to them; (2) requesting to change your username to something that is unconnected with you (possibly a random collection of letters and numbers); (3) never logging in to your account again. If you do this, you are still free to register a new username if you wish to continue editing Wikipedia. NanohaA'sYuriTalk, My master 22:06, 17 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Very Bizarre...

I was just browsing around, and when I opened the article on the movie "300," it was overlaid by a huge black panel. It had an English message at the top, claiming to be written by the Zodiac (killer, I assume), and then a paragraph of strange symbols following it. When I refreshed the article, the black panel was gone, and there's no evidence in the article's history page of any edit like the one I saw existing. Is this some type of sick prank? Don't worry, it was just template vandalism. I wonder how we can best educate editors on how to spot and fix template vandalism? It seems to cause confusion since it was fairly rare before the recent bunch of fools started up. Education will help it become a non-event, then the fool club can go find something else to do. Preferably something remotely constructive. --tiny plastic Grey Knight 16:54, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A Tale of Two References

I'm in a bit of a dispute with another editor. It's over a subway service that has not served Forest Hills on weekends for a few years now due to construction. While one published source (a timetable, dated Winter 2007-2008) states that service does run to Forest Hills on weekends, there is another published source, an advisory (that has been in effect for about a year) stating the exact opposite. Both sources are from the public authority in charge of providing service, but express two completely different things. What I would like to know is:

1. Would this be a situation where one source can cancel out the other or are both to be covered equally?
2. If one is to be cancelled, which one would set the tone for the article?

-Pacific Coast Highway {talkcontribs} 00:50, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps cover both equally, or better yet, discuss this on the article's talk page to gain consensus from other editors who are also editing the article. Gary King (talk) 07:43, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Never mind, it's resolved. Thanks. Pacific Coast Highway {talkcontribs} 02:27, 19 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Moving displaced edit command back to proper spot ?

Hi,

The articles Beryllium Vanadium Zirconium and Tin have a long box on the right that seems to have displaced the edit option for several sections. One can see the [edit]s side by side down the page after the line where the box ends. The other elements seem to have no problem with this. Could someone perhaps fix the four defective pages? This edit command appears to be a hidden one an ordinary editor cannot touch.

Adding a section to a category

Hi,

I wish to add a page to a category which has numerous sections, but only one section is relevant to the category. Is it possible to add the article to the category using the title of the section instead of the title of the article.

An example is the Lee-Enfield article, where I wish to add a particular section to a World War II category. I know you can do this as a link from an article, but what about a category list.

If not, is it possible to show different text in the category listing whilst still categorising the whole article (such as you can do for links)???

Thanks for your help. Glenn Sisson (talk) 02:12, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This is not possible. However, you can use WP:DEFAULTSORT to sort the article with a different key than its title. Gary King (talk) 07:42, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You can create a redirect to the section and add the redirecting page to the category. See Wikipedia:Categorizing redirects. This is only appropriate in some cases. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:52, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I can tell from a cursory Google search, he's someone who has had one book published that got reviewed by one CNN affiliate TV (or possibly radio) station, which suggests that he probably doesn't quite pass the notability guideline on biographies.

Is there a tool that does this?

I'm trying to figure out if two people who walked into a discussion have an overlapping edit history with a third user. More or less, I want to know if there's a previous relationship between them and why the two are quite so... vicious with the one. Any quick and dirty way to do this? SDY (talk) 08:31, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds like a human could solve this better and quicker than a computer could. Gary King (talk) 08:48, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I believe the most efficient tool would be Wikipedia:Talk page! :-P --tiny plastic Grey Knight 09:11, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You could probably construct a query to find their overlapping edits; see WP:EIW#Query. Or you could use Google wikipedia to search Wikipedia for pages which contain both of their user names (although Google does not find pages in the article Talk: namespace, which might be where they came to blows). If you had told us their user names, we could have tried some searches, and possibly given a real answer. (Ask a vague question, get a correspondingly vague answer.) --Teratornis (talk) 12:06, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I did the search in question manually already, so this particular case is moot. I'm mostly looking for talk page comments. Incivility rarely makes into the mainspace. I'll give some of these a try though. SDY (talk) 15:54, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Structure of articles

I have noticed Wikipedia articles have various forms of structure and was wondering what the best layout would be for a biography. Would it be recommended in strict chronological date order throughout the persons life, or broken down into sections - for example on early life, career, TV/radio, personal life, other facts etc. Personally, I prefer the section method as to me it makes more interesting reading, but is this frowned upon by Wikipedia as being too personalised ? Alfshire 09:46, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

I don't think it answers all your questions, but Wikipedia:Manual of Style (biographies) gives some information on layouts of biography articles. For examples for sectioning, you could compare some well-written biography articles, and see how they describe things. Biographies at Wikipedia:Featured articles would probably be a good example. -- Natalya 10:30, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
And for general layout guidelines, see WP:LAYOUT. See Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography for more about biographies. See Category:FA-Class biography articles and Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography/Recognized content#Featured articles for featured biographies - those are examples of Wikipedia's best work, which you can emulate. When you edit an article to make it comply with some policy or guideline, be informative to other editors by linking to the relevant policy or guideline page in your edit summary; for example: "Changed order of standard sections per WP:LAYOUT." Wikipedia has many editors at every level of expertise, and newer editors may not otherwise understand why you rearranged their work, unless you leave clues in the history. --Teratornis (talk) 11:57, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

For a general introduction, see b:Wiki Science/How to start a wiki. Be aware that "personal wiki" means a wiki that runs on your own computer and (generally) that only you can see. I see the most recent edit was by a bot (and the one before that minor); do you have "Hide bot edits" and/or "Hide minor edits" active on your watchlist? I think that would have this effect. I don't think it's possible to watchlist a talkpage but not its article, is it? --tiny plastic Grey Knight 12:54, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Bingo! The edit that I'm not seeing is a "minor, bot" edit. I did not realize (or I forgot) that by hiding those types of edits, I would not see other edits either, if the minor or bot edit is the most recent. Live and learn.
Putting an article on the watchlist always seems to put the talk page on it also, and vice versa. Thanks, Wanderer57 (talk) 13:15, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Aligning templates

This box is "float left".

I am creating a bunch of templates for commonly-used tables in the WP:WikiProject Tropical cyclones, and I have a question about them. When the templates are added to an article, sometimes I want the template to be left-aligned and sometimes I want to to be right-aligned. Is there a way to build this functionality into the template? Also, if someone could explain how to control the way in which text wraps around the template table I would be much obliged. Plasticup T/C 13:11, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, so I have figured out that |align="left" or |align="right" will override the template's natural alignment. But I still don't know to to control text wrapping. Sometimes I want the article's text to flow around the template and sometimes I want to break until the bottom of the template. Plasticup T/C 13:25, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
This box is "clear both".
You can give a style setting of "float: left" to have text wrap around a block, and use "clear: both" to make sure there is a break in the text. I've given examples in this discussion. :-) There's a clear template that "hard-breaks" after a template too, if that's of any help. --tiny plastic Grey Knight 13:41, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Do those let me vary the style setting between different instances of the template? For example say I have that I want to use in two articles. Can I have one article use the "float" style and another use the "clear" style? Plasticup T/C 13:54, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
(ec) You could do something like the below to conditionalise it. This assumes you are using an right parameter, as is the case on your linked example above, and it uses that to get the float direction if wrapping is used. It adds a yes parameter which controls whether to wrap text or to make the sides clear. I didn't test, but it should work. :-)
<div style="{{#ifeq: {yes} | yes | float:{right}; | clear:both; }}">example</div>

--tiny plastic Grey Knight 14:13, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I suppose I can just use clear after the template if I want the hard break. Thanks for the help! Plasticup T/C 14:00, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

When does the editing stop.

I have been researching the album "In the West" by Jimi Hendrix to clear up some puzzling discrepencies between various sources. I now have a very clear view on what the answers are and they are in conflict with the current entry on Wikipedia. When I looked at the history of this article I found that at various times the correct information had been entered, and on some occasions explanations regarding the existence of mistakes. This article seems to go back and forth between the correct and incorrect versions and I would like to know how this sort of thing can be resolved. You seem to have rules to deal with it but they obviously don't work.Chuckwallah (talk) 13:13, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Do you mean an edit war? If you have information that will clear up the dispute, please post it on the article's talk page. I guess you are talking about the Hendrix in the West article? If you see any editors undoing each other's edits, try asking them to talk to each other; it's the best way to make sure the rules get followed! :-) --tiny plastic Grey Knight 14:50, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wikilinking to Categories

Say I want to show someone this hurricane rainfall templates. If I use the standard text format I will not be creating a wikilink but rather will be adding the talk page to the category. How do I create a wikilink that will take the reader to the Category? Plasticup T/C 13:16, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just add a colon before the text: :Category:Atlantic hurricane rainfall templates results in Category:Atlantic hurricane rainfall templates. The same holds true for images. Cheers.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 13:18, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Username

I know that when changing usernames, you should always request one. But what if you were unaware of this before and now have two accounts. How do you merge an already existing name with your current name. Thank you, The Uerba (talk) 13:38, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Can't be done, I believe. Algebraist 13:58, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There's some limited ability to "usurp" another account at Wikipedia:Changing username/Usurpations, but if both accounts have lots of edits then I think you're past the limit, sorry. You can put FormerAccount on the old account's pages and User Alternate Acct Name on the new one to point out the connection, that's the best I can see. --tiny plastic Grey Knight 14:40, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Usurpation doesn't merge contrib history, it just moves one account out of the way so the other can be renamed as desired. Algebraist 21:32, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This might be totally apparent but what do the (+2) or (-568) mean on watchlists? Thanks. DeluxNate (talk) 17:34, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's the number of bytes added or removed after an edit. Your edit just showed as +197, meaning you added 197 bytes to this page. TNX-Man 17:38, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've busted an infobox

Could somebody look at American Independent Party and tell me what's wrong with the first infobox? I don't have the programmer nature, but they look identical to me save for content. --Orange Mike | Talk 19:40, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The problem is the parameter 'party_articletitle', which is set to 'America's Independent Party'. For some reason, the only purpose of this parameter is that the colour of the horizontal lines in the infobox is taken from Template:{}/meta/color. You need to create with a colourcode as its sole contents. Algebraist 19:48, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Punctuation

I'm curious on why Wikipedia uses a hyphen on the title page instead of an en dash (e.g. Main Page - Wikipedia… instead of Main Page – Wikipedia…) as an en dash is the proper form of punctuation for it, also, ellipses such as "..." instead of "…" are frequently used (on the Main Page as well). I'm curious on why this is being Wikipedia uses more or less perfect grammar, if I am wrong about this please tell me so. Also, I have grasped the fact that this doesn't really matter to most of you but, as my talk page says, I am a Grammar Nazi (please reply on my talk page).

On the second, see Wikipedia:ELLIPSES. --—— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 20:03, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Isn't this punctuation rather than grammar? – ukexpat (talk) 20:11, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm thoroughly amused by a self-professed "Grammar Nazi" who turned this beautiful sentence, complete with a comma splice: I'm curious on why this is being Wikipedia uses more or less perfect grammar, if I am wrong about this please tell me so. At any rate, the use of the hyphen in the title is deliberate and the WikiMedia software goes out of its way regarding it. If you look at McCain–Feingold bill (with an en dash), you'll note that the title is still shows "McCain-Feingold" (with a hyphen). I believe this to ensure that all browsers more appropriately display the title, rather than "McCain%E2%80%93Feingold", "McCain៛Feingold", or some other garbage. -- ShinmaWa(talk) 20:30, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Interwiki links

Which is typed like this: nl:Wikipedia:Informatiebalie Paragon12321 (talk) 19:59, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Or if internal wiki-linking isn't possible (it is in this case), you can use <span class="plainlinks"></span> to make a link look like it's internal (the arrow goes away). Example : This link takes you to the Dutch information desk. Calvin 1998 (t-c) 20:03, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yep, the URL is http://www.flickr.com/creativecommons/ - the "Attribution" and "Attribution-ShareAlike" (top one and bottom one) can be used on Wikipedia; click (see more) to bring up a page that includes a search bar. Note that we would prefer you uploading them to Wikimedia Commons, so all of Wikipedia's sister projects (Wikisource, Wikibooks, WikiQuote, etc.) can use it too. The Template:Ft to m is broken. I discovered it at Portal:Chicago/Selected article/70. However, as was discovered last week adding the precision=1 parameter. Need to site a reference for this????

I have been asked by musician Gian Pyres to expand his article on Wiki. I recently added his equipment used and wonder what is the proper way to site how this info is fact and not original research? The info is available in the inlay booklets of the various bands he's been in (and also from Gian himself).

Shawn Crapo (talk) 14:11, 19 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please see WP:OR and WP:COI. All claims must be backed up by reliable sources, otherwise it is considered original research (because it can't be verified). Furthermore, you shouldn't really write about people you know, as you can (perhaps accidentally) introduce bias in your writing. Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 14:17, 19 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Also, are you referring to the inlay booklets on CDs? I don't think they would qualify as reliable sources. Sorry, Zain Ebrahim (talk) 14:24, 19 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The issues Peter raised to the side, you might find WP:CITE helpful. It contains all manner of templates for citing different types of sources. Also, there is no reason to consider an inlay book an unreliable source, it is a great source for the equipment used by the artist in question. Cheers. L0b0t (talk) 14:27, 19 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
