À Court

The conservative politician and diplomat Sir William à Court (1779-1860) was raised to Baron Heytesbury in 1828 .

The à Court family (also A'Court [ ˈeɪkɔrt ]) is a gentry family from the south-west of England who had belonged to the British upper class since the 18th century and came from several influential politicians, officers and entrepreneurs.

The family was believed to be of Norman descent and lived in Frome and Rodden in eastern Somerset in the 17th century . However, it did not gain national importance until the beginning of the 18th century in neighboring Wiltshire : In 1705 Pierce à Court , who owned an estate in Ivy Church , married Elizabeth Ashe from the wealthy Ashe family of wool merchants . After the Ashes died out in the male line, their children inherited their property and the Heytesbury Estate , which from then on became the seat of the family. The mother's maiden name "Ashe" was used by the children as a middle name to signal their inheritance . Starting with the father Pierce à Court, numerous family members became members of Parliament and represented Heytesbury, later also other constituencies, in the House of Commons .

In addition to political activities, many family members served in the British Army or made careers in civil service. William Pierce Ashe à Court - also a member of parliament and an officer - was appointed baronet in 1795 and thus rose to the lower nobility . His sons divided the family into two branches:

The first born, William , was a successful diplomat and statesman, and finally in 1828 as Baron Heytesbury to peer appointed. His son, in turn, married a distant descendant of the famous Admiral Robert Holmes , who, as the heir of her family, brought the Holmes estate on the Isle of Wight into the marriage. The family name has now changed to "Holmes à Court".

The second line "à Court-Repington" was created when the baronet's second son became the heir of his cousin Charles Edward Repington in 1837 . On condition that he should take the name Repington , he inherited the Amington Hall estate near Tamworth in Staffordshire . Since he died childless, the name and property were given to the third brother , who continued the line. His grandson, the war correspondent Charles à Court Repington, is significant .

The short-lived line “à Court Beadon” also went from a sister of the three brothers in female descent.

Members of the family later immigrated to Canada, southern Africa, and Australia. Worth mentioning here is Robert Holmes à Court , who made a career as an entrepreneur and became Australia's first billionaire.
