It is an old Hungarian name of Turkish origin. The first known bearer of the name was the father of Árpád , Grand Duke of the Magyars, founder of the Árpád dynasty. The name means the taker , other sources say the taker . Some researchers claim that the name has its origins in the Hungarian álom (dream). The fact that the Árpáden's legend of origin is actually Emese's dream seems to confirm this theory. Alternative theories seek the meaning of the name in a connotation of the Latin almus , meaning holy .
