Sellström (2014)

Åke Sellström (* 1948 ) is a Swedish scientist who specializes in chemical weapons . Sellström is also a lecturer in histology at Umeå University .

UN missions

In the 1990s, Sellström was a member of the United Nations Special Commission and oversaw the destruction of Iraqi chemical weapons. In 2002 he returned to Iraq as a member of the UN Commission of Inquiry under the direction of Hans Blix to check whether the country had resumed production of weapons of mass destruction, but found no evidence of this.

On March 26, 2013, Sellström was appointed by the Secretary-General of the United Nations to head a commission of inquiry to investigate allegations of chemical weapons use in the Syrian civil war . After long negotiations, an agreement was reached with the Syrian government in August and the group arrived in Damascus on August 18.

Sellström presented the final report of his commission to the Secretary General on September 15, who shortly thereafter presented it to the members of the Security Council. The report is publicly available on the website of the UN Secretariat for Disarmament.
