Antarctic Ice Marathon

The Antarctic Ice Marathon is currently the only marathon race on the Antarctic mainland .

The runners can choose between four different running events. The choices include a 100-km- Ultra Marathon , a marathon , a half marathon and a 1 mile -Lauf. The Antarctic Ice Marathon mostly takes place in the Antarctic summer in November or December near the Ellsworth Mountains . The marathon course is about 700 meters above sea level, the perceived temperatures are as low as –20 ° C. The participation fee for 2018 is 16,000 euros .

Similar events are the North Pole Marathon , which is hosted by the same organizer, Polar Running Adventures , and the Antarctica Marathon , which is held on King George Island .

Special services

So far only two runners have managed to win both the marathon and the 100 kilometer run in the same year: Clément Thévenet in 2011 and Petr Vabroušek in 2013. The Czech Vabroušek set both course records: 3: 34.47 and 11: 21.46.
