Æon Flux is an animated series from 1991 to 1995. The inventor of the series and the characters in it is Peter Chung . The series was broadcast in the United States , Canada , Southeast Asia, Latin America , Great Britain and Australia and also released on DVD.

In 2005 there was a movie adaptation with Charlize Theron in the lead role, also under the title Æon Flux . Comics and video games for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox were also created based on the series .

action

The heroine Æon Flux lives in the state of Monica, the neighboring state of Bregna. Both are the last remaining habitats of mankind in 7698, which were almost wiped out by an environmental catastrophe. While Monica is anarchic, the people of Bregna live in a police state . As a hit man, secret agent and terrorist, she crosses the border more often and does murder assignments. Her recurring nemesis is Trevor Goodchild , ruler of the state of Bregna and, more often, her lover.

The individual episodes of the first season have no relation to each other. So it happens several times that Æon Flux is killed or captured, but reappears in the next episode. From season two onwards there are references and the stories are partly interwoven.

Production and publication

The animated series was commissioned by MTV , led by MTV Animation and Colossal Pictures . The Japanese studio Mook Animation and Luk Film in Korea were involved in the implementation . Howard E. Baker directed most of the episodes , as well as J. Garett Sheldrew, Peter Chung and Robert Valley. The lead author was Peter Chung, who also served as a producer alongside Catherine Winder and Nicole Paradis Grindle. Michael K. Russell and Mary Granfors were responsible for the editing. The character design comes from Osamu Tsuruyama and Tony Salmons, based on the designs by Peter Chung. The music was composed by Drew Neumann.

The first broadcast of the total of 16 episodes took place in three seasons between June 30, 1991 and October 10, 1995 on MTV. From June 1991 six short episodes were shown, which were later summarized in one episode. From September to November 1992 five episodes followed and ten more from August to October 1995. The first broadcast of a German version took place in 1999 on DF1 . In 2001 it was broadcast on K-Toon on free TV. The series has also been shown in Denmark, Spain, Portugal, Argentina, Australia, Singapore, Great Britain, Japan, Norway, Canada, Russia and Serbia, among others. In 2005 Æon Flux was released on DVD in the USA. The German version followed in 2006. The series also appeared on commercial media in other countries.

Adaptations

In 2005, directed by Karyn Kusama, an adaptation was made as a real film, also under the title Æon Flux . The title role of the film, shot in Potsdam and Berlin, took over Charlize Theron . It was released in American cinemas on December 2, 2005, and was shown in Germany on February 16, 2006. The box office results were below production costs, so the film is viewed as a flop.

In 1995, MTV's own publishing company brought out a comic for the series. The title Æon Flux: The Herodotus File tells about the background of the television series. A new edition of the story written by Mark Mars and Eric Singer came out in 2005 parallel to the movie. At the same time, Dark Horse Comics produced a four-part mini-series that appeared in 2006. The stories based on the film were written and drawn by Mike Kennedy and Timothy Green III.

A video game was also released at the start of the film. The game developed by Terminal Reality and distributed by Majesco Entertainment for Xbox and PlayStation 2 combines elements from film and series. The main character is designed after Charlize Theron and is also spoken by her.
