Étienne Turquet (* around 1495 in Cherasco , Duchy of Savoy ; † around 1560 in Lyon ) was a Lyon merchant who laid the foundation for silk cloth production in Lyon. The silk weaving was to shape the history of the city for centuries.

Turquet, who was of Piedmontese origin, started his trade in Lyon with the import of spices and velvet . From 1536 he opened the first silk weaving mills. At the same time he received permission from the city government ( Consulat de Lyon ) to recruit skilled workers from Genoa and the French King Francis I issued him the patent for the establishment of a trading company. The king, who was involved in the Italian War , also pursued the goal of breaking the monopoly of his enemies in northern Italy .

Since the society mostly employed women and children who were housed in the Aumônerie générale de Lyon , a church welfare institution, Turquet also became its almsman .
