Íñigo Ortiz de Retes was a 16th century Spanish navigator who explored the island of New Guinea and gave it the name "Nueva Guinea" .

On June 13, 1545, Ortiz de Retes left the port of Tidore , a Moluccan island, as commander of the San Juan , and reached the north coast of the island of New Guinea. Íñigo Ortiz de Retes sailed along the coast to the mouth of the Mamberamo . He took possession of the island for the Spanish crown and gave it the name Nueva Guinea because of the resemblance of the inhabitants to the people of the Guinea coast in West Africa .
