The Île de Cavallo is an island of the Îles Lavezzi , an archipelago consisting of around 100 islands and granite rocks in the Strait of Bonifacio between Corsica and Sardinia .

The island is one of the southernmost inhabited points of France in Europe; it is about 4 km from the Corsican mainland, south of the Pointe de Sperono . In addition to the Île de Cavallo, the uninhabited Île Lavezzi to the south as well as Piana, Ratino , Poraggia and Perduto belong to the French national territory. These have been declared nature reserves.

The Île de Cavallo is privately owned. The island, which is predominantly inhabited by billionaires, has an artificially created harbor and landing area for small aircraft, and it made global headlines:

  • In 1978, Prince Viktor Emanuel of Savoy allegedly fired several shots during a dispute in the harbor, which hit an uninvolved German student, the son of Ryke Geerd Hamer . He was seriously injured and succumbed to his injuries four months later.
  • In 1990, Corsican separatists blew up two restaurants under construction.
  • In 1991 a court ordered the construction of a new concrete marina illegally built for industrialist Jacky Setton (Pioneer France).
  • One of the dream villas of the beer magnate Freddy Heineken , who died in 2002, was up for grabs .

In the holiday season, a boat sails daily from the Corsican mainland ( Piantarella ) to the famous five-star hotel restaurant des Pecheurs . The crossing takes 10 minutes by private boat of the hotel, about 15 minutes by public boat, provided there are favorable winds. You can also take a helicopter or plane from Figari airport to the island.
