The Ile de la Passe is one of the coast's largest district in the country Grand Port offshore island in the southeast of Mauritius .
The island, formed from shell limestone, is 250 meters long in northwest-southeast expansion, a maximum of 170 meters wide, has a size of 4 hectares and is about 1 kilometer off the coast of Mahébourg at the only opening of the coral reef through which larger ships pass can.
On the uninhabited island there are remains of an old fortification that controlled the entrance to the port of the old capital Grand Port, it was the scene of the naval battle of Grand Port in 1810 . These facilities are under monument protection .
