The Îles Nuageuses ( German for "cloudy islands" ) are an uninhabited group of islands in the Kerguelen archipelago in the southern Indian Ocean . Politically, they belong to the French overseas territory Terres australes et antarctiques françaises (TAAF).
geography
The Îles Nuageuses are located in the northwest of the Kerguelen Archipelago, around 15 km northwest of Grande Terre , and form - apart from the isolated Îlot du Rendez-vous - the northernmost land mass of the archipelago. The archipelago consists of the two main islands Île de Croÿ in the southwest and Île du Roland in the northeast, each with an area of 7 km², and the Îles Ternay , which are located between the main islands in the 7 km wide Passe de l'Alouette . The highest point of the archipelago is the Pic de l'île de Croÿ with 518 m, the second highest is the Pic Charcot on the Île du Roland with 500 m above sea level. Like all Kerguelen Islands, the archipelago is of volcanic origin.
Fauna
The islands are an important breeding area for numerous bird species. The Kerguelen duck ( Anas eatoni ), the rockhopper penguin ( Eudyptes chrysocome ), the wandering albatross ( Diomedea exulans ) and the gray-headed albatross ( Thalassarche chrysostoma ) breed here . The Îles Nuageuses are part of the “Réserve naturelle nationale des Terres australes françaises” nature reserve and are one of only seven “zones à accès réglementé” under particularly strict protection.
