history

Hamburg's HafenCity was constituted as a new district in 2008. As early as 2007, representatives of 17 and later 19 Christian denominations founded the Brücke - Ökumenisches Forum HafenCity association in Hamburg , which aimed to create a non- denominational church center for the district. The association commissioned the ecumenical Laurentius Convention , a non-denominational spiritual community established in Delmenhorst in 1959, to shape the spiritual life in the future forum together with the pastor of the house. The HafenCity Ecumenical Forum was completed and opened in 2012 under the auspices of the Brücke Association . The Hamburg group of the Laurentiuskonvent lives together with an ecumenical house community on the upper floors.

Coming from the street, the visitor first enters an anteroom. Quotes from the Charter Oecumenica in several languages (Danish, German, English, Russian) can be read on the doors of the chapel . The chapel has a meditative, sober character. The view falls on a semicircular brick back wall. The stones of the apse are set on a hole and backlit with warm light. In front of it are the altar, lectern and cross.

The left side of the brick wall as seen from the entrance was designed by the churches, in which images play a stronger role. Here you can see a Russian Orthodox icon of the Theotokos and a Greek Orthodox icon " Jesus Christ , the port of the afflicted". The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Hamburg contributed a relic of the old church benefactor and martyr Laurentius of Rome , the Old Catholic Parish a quote from Bishop Joseph H. Reinkens : "Everything that is not done out of conviction is sin."

The right side of the brick wall was designed by the Reformation churches involved in the project, which see themselves more as churches of the word. Here, bricks were labeled with texts characteristic of the respective denomination:

  • Anglican Church: "No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends." ( Joh 15,13  LUT )
  • Evangelical Lutheran Church: "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light on my way." ( Ps 119,105  LUT )
  • Evangelical Reformed Church: "You must make yourself no image or any parable, neither of what is in heaven above, nor of what is below on earth, nor of what is in the water under the earth" ( Ex 20 , 4  LUT )
  • Evangelical free church congregations (Baptists): "One Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all people." ( Eph 4,5–6  LUT )
  • Mennonite congregation: "You, God, set our feet on the path of peace." ( Lk 1,79  LUT )
  • Evangelical Methodist Church: "We think and let think and insist on only one thing, faith, who is active through love." ( John Wesley )
