The Ölbergbildstock in Volkacher Strasse

The Ölbergbildstock is a martyr erected in 1725 on Volkacher Strasse in the Lower Franconian community of Sommerach .

history

The wayside shrine was donated in 1725 by the Sommerach citizen couple Valentin Gehrich and Margaretha Gehrichin. The sculptor is unknown, he left the initials "RT" on the back . The stick originally stood behind a mighty chestnut that was classified as a natural monument . As a result, it remained hidden for a long time and was not renovated. In particular, the top of the wayside shrine was exposed to the elements.

In 1999, the community of Sommerach commissioned the Schwarzach company Dresch-Fritzsch to renew the stick. The essay was rotated because the details of the crucifixion scene on the front could no longer be reconstructed. In addition, the wayside shrine was moved next to the tree and closer to the road. At the same time it was surrounded by a metal canopy. The wayside shrine is listed as an architectural monument by the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments .
