A hydraulic motor , and hydraulic motor called, has the task of hydraulic power (pressure x volume) into mechanical work to convert. There is a large number of designs for this purpose, the mode of operation of which can be roughly divided into fixed and variable displacement motors.

Hydrostatic drives have a fixed relationship between volume flow and speed, but can be switchable. They are constructed like hydraulic pumps (e.g. like a gear pump ); the energy transported with the oil flow is in turn converted back into rotational energy by the action of pressure on the gears. They are used as a drive u. a. used for conveyor belts. Axial piston motor designs are available with both constant and variable stroke volumes. They are used, for example, to drive excavators, and in this context they are often referred to as hydrostatic transmissions .

The torque generated by hydrodynamic motors can often be controlled independently of the speed (see fluid coupling , hydraulic transmission ).

The maximum torque of a hydraulic motor is determined by the pressure of the hydraulic fluid. The displacement determines the speed; it depends on the volume flow supplied .

Designs are z. B. the axial piston motor , the radial piston motor , gear pumps and various impeller shapes in fluid drives .
