The Austrian Horticultural Society (ÖGG) is an association for garden and plant lovers. It was initiated in Vienna in 1827 by Carl Freiherrn von Hügel , a globetrotting diplomat and natural scientist. The Society was constituted on January 11, 1837, and on September 30 of that year, based on new statutes, it was given the right to hold the title of an Imperial and Royal Society .

It was originally located in the Viennese horticultural building (formerly the flower room), in 2005 it was relocated to Siebeckstrasse in the 22nd district of Donaustadt , named after the German-Austrian garden designer Rudolph Siebeck . The Gartenbaukino is still owned by the ÖGG.

The ÖGG is an interest group for all garden and plant enthusiasts and connects their organizations. Its current president is Herbert Eipeldauer III . It is divided into five sections and eight specialist groups. The ÖGG and the Österreichische Agrarverlag publish the GARTEN + HAUS magazine .

history

The kk Gartenbau-Gesellschaft was formally founded in 1837. The basis was the "Plant Exhibition in Vienna" held annually from 1827 in the glass house of Schwarzenberg's garden , initiated and sponsored by Carl Freiherrn von Hügel (1796–1870), among others.

In the first decades, members (or founders, patrons, sponsors) were primarily aristocratic garden owners, and the imperial family, who were enthusiastic about gardens, also played an important role. Until 1858, the company and the kk Landwirtschafts-Gesellschaft used part of the garden (left in October 1837) and the glass houses at the former Harrach'schen Gartenpalais in Ungargasse in what is now the 3rd district of Vienna. From 1859 to 1864 the club was located in the Belvedere, built by Fischer von Erlach, in the garden of Palais Liechtenstein in Rossau. Thanks to a donation of land by the imperial family, a new company building was built on Parkring by the architect August Weber from 1863 to 1864. Plant exhibitions were not only held twice a year in the flower rooms, but they were also a popular venue for a wide variety of events, such as B. 1867 the farmers ball of the Viennese artists' association Hesperus and the first art exhibition of the Vienna Secession . The horticultural cinema had been on the premises of the Gartenbau-Gesellschaft since 1919. The community garden, which was also used for exhibitions, was laid out by Lothar Abel. From 1959 to 1962 the old horticultural building was torn down and the new horticultural building was built. An open-plan cinema was built in the new building, which is still owned by the ÖGG today. In 2005 the ÖGG moved to the former horticultural school in Vienna-Kagran. The ÖGG provided important impulses in the field of training, the profession and the advanced training of laypeople. In 1868 the first horticultural school was opened and existed until 1951. In 1895 the higher horticultural school was founded in Eisgrub (Lednice). From 1912 there were several specialist training schools for gardening apprentices, which were operated by the Horticultural Society. The Gartenbau-Gesellschaft has been publishing a gardening magazine since 1868, and since 2002 together with the Austrian Agricultural Publishing House under the name Garten + Haus. The further training of laypeople was always the focus of the work. Today members and non-members can expand their knowledge in numerous courses, workshops and lectures on various gardening topics.
