Austrian military cemetery in St. Jakob / Bozen
The Austrian military cemetery in St. Jakob is one of the oldest military cemeteries in Tyrol . It is located in the part of St. Jakob belonging to the city of Bolzano .
history
The cemetery was laid out in 1859 for the Austrian soldiers killed in the Sardinian War . Later, the remains of soldiers who died in the battles of 1848/49 were transferred from the Bolzano parish cemetery to St. Jakob. In the war between Austria and the emerging Italy in 1866, many wounded and dying came to Bozen. The cemetery is also the final resting place for South Tyroleans who died as Austrian soldiers in the First World War and as German soldiers in the Second World War. The Bolzano Military Veterans Association (in the South Tyrolean Black Cross and Austrian Black Cross ), founded in 1874, looks after the military cemetery.
