Refugees protest in Berlin in 2013.

Thinking outside the box e. V. is a non-profit organization that works for the integration of immigrants . The head office is in Berlin . The organization was founded in April 2014. Thinking outside the box (alluding to the phrase " thinking outside the box ") advocates for the coexistence of refugees and residents. The association is now active in over 30 cities.

history

The idea began to develop when there were major protests by refugees in Berlin in 2013 on Oranienplatz in Berlin. The initiators read a lot about the protests in the media, but who the people who protested in the square were, did not emerge from the coverage. The first goal was to get to know the refugees. The initiators decided to approach the refugees on the square and cook with them. A cookbook emerged from this joint cooking . This cookbook contained the refugees' original recipes but also their personal stories. The cookbook itself was created as part of the Funpreneur competition at the Free University of Berlin . A product was supposed to be designed and brought to market there within eight weeks. The first book contained 21 recipes that were collected from residents of refugee shelters and on Oranienplatz. In December 2013, the team received the Funpreneur Prize for developing the book. Initially, only 400 recipe collections were printed. However, there were soon so many orders that the four founders wanted to professionalize the project.

Cooking together gave rise to the idea of having refugees give cooking courses. This idea was developed under the umbrella of the Social Impact Lab in spring 2014. It was important to the initiators to always bring refugees and locals together on an equal footing. The position of the refugees in the leading role during the courses means that “the self-confidence of an expert” takes the place of “the humility of a supplicant”.

A second cookbook was published later. It contained 36 prescriptions from 27 refugees. The cooks come from countries like Afghanistan, Syria, Guinea, Niger, Macedonia and Chechnya.

The original idea of the association was for refugees to teach cooking together with locals and thus introduce their culture through food. The aim is for locals who are otherwise unrelated to escape to gain a better understanding of the situation of refugees through cooking and contact with the cooks.

Club activity

The association runs various programs to support integration. These include the Champion Program , Satellite Program , Kitchen on the Run , Job Buddy Program and Building Bridges . In the champion program, social networks are to be established for the refugees. The association supports this by coaching the volunteers and providing infrastructure and resources. Central activities include cooking together, playing sports, singing or gardening, but also tandem language courses . The satellite program includes the support of the satellites in cities outside of Berlin. There are a total of 31 satellites from Über den Tellerrand in the Netherlands , Switzerland , Austria and Germany . The association provides the satellites with structured guides, work templates and offers advice. The association also organizes an annual satellite congress in which the individual communities come together and develop the project further. Kitchen on the Run is a mobile kitchen with which Italy, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden were toured in 2016. It was cooked in the countries together with refugees and locals in the mobile kitchen. The aim was to spread the idea of Über den Tellerrand internationally and further expand the network. The sub-project was funded by the Advocate Europe program . In the future, a fleet of similar mobile kitchens is to be created that will be used in different regions. In the Job Buddy program , experienced employees help refugees find their way around the job market , prepare application documents and prepare for job interviews . The association also supports the program with thematic lectures and workshops. In the Building Bridges program, teams consisting of a local and a former refugee support newly arriving refugees from the same country of origin. The combination of locals and refugees who are already integrated makes it easier to overcome language barriers. In addition, refugees who have already been integrated have a better understanding of the difficulties faced by newly arriving refugees.
