Council of Europe Convention on the Protection of Children from Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse

The Council of Europe Convention on the Protection of Children from Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse (known as the Lanzarote Convention ) was adopted by the Council of Europe on October 25, 2007 .

The agreement with ETS no. 201 is open to signature by all member states of the Council of Europe and all non-member states that participated in the drafting of the convention, as well as the European Community. Other non-member states can accede to the Convention at the invitation of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe. As a treaty under international law , the Convention alone has no impact on criminal law. However, the states that have ratified it commit themselves to take certain actions. Among other things, states undertake to prosecute sexual abuse even if it occurs within the family or abroad. The convention also provides for programs to assist victims.

Austria's parliament ratified the convention in autumn 2010 and it came into force in Austria on June 1, 2011 ( Federal Law Gazette III No. 96/2011 ). The Switzerland ratified the treaty on March 18, 2014, he joined the same time as criminal tightening into force on 1 July 2014. Germany ratified the convention on November 18, 2015 and entered into force on March 1, 2016.

The Czech Republic , as a member of the Council of Europe, ratified the agreement in May 2016 and Armenia in May 2020. The following members of the Council of Europe have not yet ratified the convention: Azerbaijan and Ireland.
