Thor (ship, 1920)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The coast guard ship Thor (in Icelandic spelling: Þór ), also known as Gamli Þór (Old Thor) or Thor I , was the first ship of the Icelandic coast guard . The namesake Thor is a god of Norse mythology .

history

The Thor was initially a rescue ship of the Westman Islands rescue company from 1920 . The full takeover of this ship by the Icelandic government on July 1, 1926 was also the birth of the Icelandic Coast Guard. As early as 1922, the Icelandic government, in cooperation with the Westman Islands , used the Thor for patrols. In 1924, a 47mm cannon was installed on the ship after it became apparent that foreign captains were unwilling to follow instructions from an unarmed ship.

The Thor was stranded in Húnaflói in 1929 .

The Icelandic Coast Guard already operated four ships named Thor . The ship described here was followed by the second Thor from 1930, the third ship of the same name in 1951 and finally the fourth Thor from 2011.
