Þjóðólfr ór Hvini

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Þjóðólfr Or Hvini as Þjóðólfr hen Hvínverski was a Norwegian skald , who at the beginning of the 9th century (probably 885-920 n. Chr.) The reign of Harald Fairhair lived and as author worked.

About the person and life of Þjóðólfr only the sparse information is available that the Icelander Snorri Sturluson provided in his work on the Skaldic poetic language, the Skáldskaparmál , and in the prologue to the Heimskringla . In terms of time, he can also be assessed because his seals have parallels ( shield seal ) in the treatment of the fabric to the Skald Bragi Boddason . A mocking poem on King Harald is considered an additional clue, although its authenticity is unclear.

His literary work is significant because of the 38-stanza Ynglingatal and the 20-strophic Hauslǫng . In these poems, especially in the Hauslǫng, the sophisticated Norwegian art poetry in the courtyard of Dróttkvætt is already fully developed by the middle of the 9th century. Jan de Vries therefore suspects, using the example of Þjóðólfr and Bragi, that the origins of this form can be dated to the 8th century.

In the Ynglingatal, Þjóðólfr processed genealogical material for the history of the Ynglinger family . In the Hauslǫng he takes up material from Nordic mythology around the story of Thor and the giant Thjazi .
