The M 251.1 series were four-axle, twin-engine benzene - mechanical railcars for mixed traffic of the former Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD). They were among the first types of twin-engine railcars with mechanical power transmission.

History and commitment

The railcars were built in 1931 as a further test railcar for the twin-engine drive with mechanical power transmission analogous to the M 221.2 .

The car was always used in Slovakia . In 1940 it was reconstructed for use in hilly terrain. The gear ratio was changed. The maximum speed of the vehicle then changed to 60 km / h and the name of the car has since been M 231.1 . Due to the deployment in Slovakia, it can be assumed that it was deployed over the period of World War II .

They were taken out of service in 1948. It is known that the M 251.102 continued to be used as a contact line inspection vehicle EL 51319 after it was taken out of service and that it is available in Bratislava .

technical features

View of the planetary gear type Tatra

The vehicles were powered by two six-cylinder four-stroke gasoline engines from Tatra . As with the M 221.2, the motors were designed as reversing motors. They also had a planetary gear from the same manufacturer. The unit acted on the inner axis of the bogie. The change in the direction of travel of the railcar was made by changing the direction of rotation of the motor. Compared to the M 221.2, only the gear ratio on the drive axle was changed in order to achieve a higher speed.

The car body was taken over from the M 251.0 , with seating arrangements 2 + 2 in the smaller compartment. This gives contradicting information about the classes of the vehicle used. In the dimensional sketches (see web links) is 2./3. Class listed, in the technical data only the 3rd class is given.
