The ČSD series M 244.0 were two-axle diesel railcars of the former Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD), which were intended for use on the local railways of the Friedland District Railway (FBB). The vehicles were the last railcars produced by Severočeská Vagónka in Česká Lípa .

history

FBB saw itself forced early on to counter the competition from bus traffic by operating its branch lines more economically with diesel multiple units. After the line's top speed was increased from 25 to 40 km / h on August 13 and 14, 1931, the M 244.0 series railcars were tested on August 18.

After test drives were carried out from August 18 to 20, 1931, the scheduled operation of the railcars began immediately afterwards. The population's interest in this technical innovation was enormous. The number of passengers carried immediately doubled.

However, after only 20 days of regular operational use, it became apparent that the required maximum service weight of 22 t had been exceeded by far. The empty mass of the railcars alone was 28 t, and 30 tonnes were occupied with passengers. Therefore, both cars had to be taken out of service due to the overloading of the superstructure and the Hradec Králové State Railway Directorate forbade further use on the FBB routes. On September 12, 1931, the old timetable was put back into force with the use of steam locomotives.

The railcar traffic on the Friedland district railway was then resumed in 1934 with vehicles of the ČSD series M 120.5 . The literature does not reveal anything about further inserts in the M 244.0 series. It is only stated that both cars were retired in 1948 and 1950.

The car body of the M 244.002 was preserved for some time. The railcar stayed in Veselí nad Lužnicí after the war . There it was used for a while as a normal passenger coach. In the 1970s it was retired from the Nymburk repair shop , and the car body has been in a garden ever since. It was later cut up.

technical features

The railcar was powered by a standing 6-cylinder 4-stroke diesel engine from MAN . The power transmission was done electrically. The diesel engine and generator were arranged in a subframe under the floor of the car, and the diesel engine protruded lengthways into the passenger compartment. It was covered by a bench. Two electric traction motors, designed as pivot bearing motors, enabled a top speed of 70 km / h.

The car body was designed as a wooden structure clad with sheet metal. The passenger compartment had 44 3rd class seats and was heated by the cooling circuit of the diesel engine. Driver's cabs were arranged at both ends of the vehicle.

The wagons had a single-release Knorr- type train brake with an additional brake.
