Axel Borsdorf

Axel Borsdorf (born March 8, 1948 in Volmerdingsen ) is a German geographer . From 1991 until his retirement in 2014 he taught as a university professor at the University of Innsbruck .

Life

Education

From 1968 to 1974, Borsdorf studied geography , German language and literature , geology and prehistory at the universities of Göttingen , Valdivia ( Chile ) and Tübingen. In 1976 the doctorate to Dr. phil. with Herbert Wilhelmy in Tübingen with an urban geographic work on the Chilean medium- sized towns Valdivia and Osorno , and in 1985 the habilitation and venia legendi for geography in Tübingen with a regional geographic work on Aysén in the western Patagonian southern Andes .

Professorship and visiting professorships

In 1991 he was offered a professorship for geography at the University of Innsbruck as the successor to Adolf Leidlmair . He also received visiting professorships at the University of Oregon at Eugene , Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok , the University of Bern , the Universidad de Chile ( Santiago ), the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (Santiago), the Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas , Mexico , and the Universidad Austral de Chile .

Memberships

Borsdorf was a real member until 2018 and is now a corresponding member abroad of the Austrian Academy of Sciences after moving to Germany . From 1999 to 2006 he was director of the Institute for Urban and Regional Research of the Austrian Academy of Sciences founded by Elisabeth Lichtenberger . In 2006 he became director of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Mountain Research of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, which he founded. He was also chairman of the Association of Scientific Geography in Austria. He is also a member of the Austrian National Committee Global Change and the Austrian National Committee Man and Biosphere . From 2004 to 2006 he was President of the Austrian Geographical Society . The Innsbruck Geographical Society appointed him honorary chairman in 2014. Since 2015 he has been an honorary member of Long Term Ecological Research Austria . In 2016 he was awarded the Franz von Hauer Medal of the Austrian Geographical Society. Axel Borsdorf is old man of the Salia-Jenensis gymnastics club .

research

In his scientific work, Borsdorf devotes himself to cultural-geographical urban and mountain research as well as to geographical methodology and methodology . His works often follow the culture-morphogenetic approach that was developed in the 1920s by Oskar Schmieder (under the influence of Carl O. Sauer in Berkeley) and transferred to cities in Latin America by Herbert Wilhelmy. Since the late 1970s, Borsdorf's research on socio-spatial segregation and fragmentation in Latin American cities has been widespread, and in 2002 - together with Jürgen Bähr and Michael Janoschka - led to a synthesis of different cultural-genetic city ​​models . His regional geographic focus is western South America , especially Chile , and Europe .

Borsdorf was the editor and member of the editorial board of several specialist publications. He was also the founder of eco.mont - Journal on Protected Mountain Areas Research and Management . From 1998 to 2012 he was co-editor of the geography journal DIE ERDE, published since 1853 and thus the oldest still in existence - journal of the Geography Society in Berlin .
