Austrian Geographical Society

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Austrian Geographical Society (ÖGG) is an Austrian scientific association based in Vienna . The president has been Helmut Wohlschlägl since 2015 .

society

With around 1,300 members, consisting of natural persons and scientific institutions, the ÖGG is one of the largest scientific associations in Austria. The association holds regular lectures and discussions, excursions and trips. Own publications are brought out for the members. The association runs a library that contains around 22,000 volumes of monographs from around the world, 40% of which date from before 1918. Magazines are exchanged with partners around the world, which means that the collection is constantly being expanded. Finally, the library is home to a map collection of approximately 4,100 units. The library has been on loan to the State Archives since 1997 . It is continuously digitally recorded there.

Particularly noteworthy pieces are the world atlas Theatrum Orbis Terrarum by Abraham Ortelius from Antwerp 1571 and the nine volumes of The Balearic Islands by Archduke Ludwig Salvator from 1887.

history

The kk geographical society was founded in 1856. The first volume of the communications of the Imperial and Royal Geographical Society was published as early as 1857 . The ÖGG was also involved in carrying out the Novara expedition from 1857 to 1859, as well as in numerous other research expeditions.

In 1902 the association already had 2,065 members. Both world wars hit the club hard, but research was continued over and over again. After the Second World War , for example, cooperation with the Institute for Geography was intensified.

From 1961 special commissions were established

  • 1961: Cartographic Commission
  • 1987: Geomorphological Commission
  • 1992: Commission for Applied Geography
  • 1994: Commission for Subject Didactics and School Geography
  • 1998: Young ÖGG

In addition, from 1958 branch associations that "operate" independently or branch offices were founded.

  • 1952: Salzburg branch
  • 1958: Krems branch (existed until 1976)
  • 1971: Branch association: Innsbruck Geographical Society
  • 1987: Graz branch
  • 1989: Klagenfurt branch
  • 2001: Branch association: Salzburg Geographical Society
