Alexander Supan (born March 3, 1847 in Innichen , Tyrol , † July 7, 1920 in Breslau ) was an Austrian geographer .

Life

Alexander Supan was born in 1847 as the younger brother of Josef Suppan . After studying in Graz and Vienna , Supan became a teacher at the secondary school in Laibach in 1871 . From 1875 to 1877 he went again to Graz , Halle (Saale) and Leipzig to prepare for the academic subject . In 1877, Supan worked as a teacher at the Imperial and Royal High School in Chernivtsi and as a private lecturer at the Franz Joseph University . In 1884 she appointed him professor of geography . In the same year he also took over the publication of Petermanns Geographische Mitteilungen , for which he founded the useful geographical literature reports in 1885. He served as editor for 25 years. In 1909 he moved to the Silesian Friedrich Wilhelms University , where he was professor of geography until 1916.

In 1886 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . In 1904 he received the Cothenius Medal of the Leopoldina.
