Ingrid Kretschmer

Ingrid Erika Kretschmer (born February 22, 1939 in Linz ; † January 22, 2011 ibid.) Was an Austrian cartographer , geographer and university professor at the University of Vienna .

Life

Kretschmer studied geography and folklore at the University of Vienna with the dissertation title The thematic map as a scientific form of expression of folklore with special consideration of the presentation methods for folklore subject areas: an investigation into folklore cartography , where connections to cartography emerged early on. In 1966 she was appointed university assistant to the newly created professorship for geography and cartography at the University of Vienna. In 1974 she qualified as a professor in the subject “Geography with special attention to cartography”, and from 1975 Ingrid Kretschmer was a lecturer in cartography. Kretschmer taught at the Institute for Geography at the University of Vienna and was appointed university professor in 1988. Her specialties were the history of cartography , thematic cartography and school cartography . Her scientific work comprises around 250 publications, including several monographs on cartographic topics as well as numerous articles in the most important journals in geography and cartography. Kretschmer was the long-time president (1997 to 2006) and honorary president of the Austrian Geographical Society and from 1995 to 2006 chairwoman of the Austrian Cartographic Commission. In 2004 she was awarded the Mercator Medal , the highest award of the German Society for Cartography , for her outstanding, internationally recognized scientific achievements and her extraordinary services to cartography .

Kretschmer was buried at the Meidlinger Friedhof . In June 2013 the Kretschmerweg in the 21st district of Floridsdorf was named after her.
