Mercator medal
The Mercator Medal is a medal donated by the German Society for Cartography and is awarded for outstanding achievements and services to cartography . The gold medal shows the conformal mesh of the Mercator projection in the background and a figure in the foreground who is sitting in front of the atlas holding a globe.

Different meaning
The Mercator Medal issued by Sparkasse Duisburg since 2012 should not be confused with the DGfK medal. Instead, it is a “high quality and timeless reminder” of Gerhard Mercator's 500th birthday .
