List of domestic dogs

The Český strakatý pes (Czech for Czech spotted / spotted dog), or Strakáč for short (Czech for spotted dog ), is a dog breed from the Czech Republic that is not recognized by the FCI . It is recognized by the Českomoravská kynologická unie (ČMKU), which represents the Czech Republic in the FCI and classified by the latter in FCI group 9, section 10 . The breeders of the Český strakatý pes are organized in the Club Chovatelů Málopočetných plemen psů and in the Spolek českého strakatého psa .

history

The breed emerged from 1954 in the laboratories of the Czech Academy of Sciences , in the Institute of Physiology. František Horák needed laboratory dogs, but could not afford Beagle laboratory breeding and bred with street dogs . The beginning of the breed consisted of a lop-eared German shepherd and a three-colored spotted fox terrier-like dog. Later a German Shorthaired Pointer was crossed , which brought the brown color. In the breeding of laboratory dogs, among other things, the nature of the dogs played a role. The aim of the breeding was a uniform being, the dogs should be calm and friendly.

In 1960 the breed was registered in the Czech Republic under the name Horákův laboratorní pes (Horak Laboratory Dog), first exhibited in 1961 . In the 1980s, the research was stopped and the dogs should be placed under the breed association. When, after long negotiations, the first litter outside the breeding station was registered in 1991, there were hardly any breeding animals left and the breed was rebuilt. Dogs of unknown origin and a small Münsterländer were crossed.

The first breed standard , developed by František Horák, dates from January 1994, the current standard from 2008.

Appearance

The Český strakatý pes is a medium-sized dog. Males should have a height at the withers of 45 to 53 cm, bitches are slightly smaller at 43 to 51 cm. The body is slightly longer than it is tall (ratio around 110–120%). The chest should be about half the height at the withers. The Strakáč is available in four three-colored fur variants: black-brown with white or brown-light brown with white, each with long or short hair.

Essence

Eva-Maria Krämer describes the Strakáč as “adaptable and versatile, spirited, eager to work and docile. A pleasant dog for beginners, friendly and easy to train, alert, but not aggressive, and socially acceptable. "
