İdris Baluken (2015)

İdris Baluken (born July 2, 1976 in Bingöl ) is a Kurdish politician of the " Democratic Party of the Peoples " (HDP).

Youth and career

Baluken originally comes from bing oil. The family is of Zaza origin. Baluken attended high school in Bingöl. He then studied human medicine at Ankara University . Baluken made his specialist doctor in a hospital on Heybeliada . He then worked as a doctor in hospitals in Bingöl and Diyarbakır in departments for thoracic diseases.

Political activity

In the legislative period from 2011 to 2015, Baluken was a member of parliament for a constituency in Bingöl . In the 24th legislative period Baluken was a member of parliament for Diyarbakır and chairman of the HDP in the Turkish parliament . From 2012 to 2014 Baluken was the parliamentary group leader of the Party for Peace and Democracy (BDP). Then he joined the sister party HDP.

Prosecution

He was arrested in November 2016 and charged with terrorist propaganda. In January 2017, he was released after the first day of the trial and arrested again two days later. In January 2018, he was sentenced to 16 years and 8 months. His lawyer Reyhan Yalçındağ Baydemir said the verdict was largely based on speeches that he made in parliament and later repeated in front of his supporters. The judgment is unlawful and they would appeal. In May 2018, the Gaziantep Court of Appeal upheld the verdict. The sentence was set at nine years and two months.

Baluken is married and has two children.
