İmren Aykut

İmren Aykut (* 1940 in Kozan ) is a Turkish economist, trade unionist and politician. Between 1987 and 2002 she was a member of the Turkish National Assembly, and in the 1980s and 1990s she was Minister of Labor and Social Security, Minister of State and Minister of the Environment. Aykut was the first female minister in an elected government in Turkey.

Life

Aykut was born in 1940 in Kozan near Adana as the daughter of Evket Şadi and his wife Emine . She attended Ataturk Elementary School and Adana Girls' School. She then studied economics at the Istanbul University and graduated successfully in 1964. Aykut specialized in industrial relations and trade unionism at the University of Oxford . She also completed a program on employee participation at the University of Oslo in Norway. She researched arbitration and mediation in the United States and the structure of trade unions and employee training in England. She also conducted research and studies on the Federation of Trade Unions and the Department of Labor in the UK. At the Istanbul Üniversitesi she did her doctorate with the dissertation "Exchange rates from the perspective of employees (outside Turkey) and their analysis from the perspective of the Turkish economy".

Aykut then worked for two trade unions between 1964 and 1975 as department head for collective bargaining and research and in 1975/76 as a specialist in industrial relations at the chemical company Şişecam . In 1976 she became general secretary of the paper industry union and was in office until 1983.

In 1981 Aykut became a member of the Consultative Assembly of Turkey, which was set up to draft a new constitution after the military coup in Turkey in 1980 , and in 1983 was a founding member of the Milliyetçi Demokrasi Partisi (MDP). After the game was dissolved, she joined the Anavatan Partisi (ANAP).

In the 1987 general election, she became a member of the Turkish Grand National Assembly for Istanbul and was re-elected in 1991. In 1995 and 1999 she moved into parliament for Adana. Under Turgut Özal she became Minister of Labor and Social Security in the 46th government of Turkey and remained that way until 1991 under Yıldırım Akbulut . She was Minister of State in the Cabinet of the 48th Government and the 53rd Government of Mesut Yılmaz . On June 23, 1991 she became Environment Minister in the 55th government and remained in office until the end of the legislative period on November 20, 1991.

Aykut was the first female minister in an elected government in Turkey.
