İsmet Özel

İsmet Özel (born September 19, 1944 in Kayseri ) is a Turkish poet and essayist.

Life

Özel is the sixth child of a police officer from Söke . He attended primary and secondary schools in Kastamonu , Çankırı and Ankara . In 1962 he began studying at the Political Science Faculty of Ankara University , which he did not finish. In the meantime he worked for various trade unions and graduated from Hacettepe University in 1977 with a degree in French language and literature. Later he founded the Çıdam publishing house. From 1980 until his retirement in 1998 he was a lecturer in French at the Istanbul State Conservatory and at the Mimar Sinan University. His program Ismet Özel'le basbasa (In private with Ismet Özel) on the television channel Kanal 7 addressed artistic, political and social problem areas.

In 1985, Ismet Özel was named Essayist of the Year by the Association of Turkish Writers, and in 1985 he was awarded the Gabriela Mistral Prize.

Ismet Özel lives in Istanbul.

Ismet Özel's first poem Yorgun (Exhausted) appeared in Yelken magazine in 1963. Although his poems remain formally true to modernity, they are characterized by their expressiveness. After the military coup of 1971, Özel, who had previously been close to the radical left and socialist realism, turned into an Islamic intellectual and poet and allowed this attitude to flow into his poetry.
