The İstiklâl Madalyası ( Ottoman استقلال مدالیه سی 'Independence Medal ' ) is a medal endowed by law by the Grand National Assembly ( Büyük Millet Meclisi ) for special merits during the Turkish War of Independence .

Appearance and material

The oval-shaped independence medal made of brass is 35 × 40 mm in size and weighs 15.55 g. On its front, it shows a rising sun, under which the building is depicted in which the Büyük Millet Meclisi first met on April 23, 1920. To the right and left of the building you can see houses and a mosque and below the building a farmer with an ox cart . The reverse shows a map of Turkey within the moon star.

People who had fought on the front wore the medal on a red ribbon. The medal was given on a white ribbon to helpers behind the front and a green ribbon to members of parliament. Members of parliament who had done their best at the front were awarded a medal of independence with a red and green ribbon.

The İstiklâl Madalyası was awarded to natural persons as well as to the province of Kahramanmaraş (red ribbon) and the district of İnebolu (white ribbon).
