Ōta Kijirō

Ōta Kijirō ( Japanese 太 田 喜 二郎 ; born December 1, 1883 in Kyoto ; died October 27, 1951 ) was a Japanese painter in the Yōga style of the Taishō and Shōwa periods .

life and work

Ōta was the son of a merchant. He studied under Kuroda Seiki at the "Tokyo Art School" (forerunner of Tōkyō Geijutsu Daigaku ) and at the same time attended the forerunner of Foreign Language University Tokyo , where he learned English and French. After completing his training in 1908, he went to Belgium. There he continued his education at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten under Emile Claus , from whom he took over the pointillist style of painting.

Back in Japan in 1913 he became a member of the Kōfū-kai ( 光 風 会 ) artists' association founded the year before . In 1914 he exhibited at the annual state art exhibition "Bunten" ( 文 展 ) and received a 2nd prize. In the following year he was also awarded a second prize. In 1919 he became a member of the jury for the state “Teiten” ( 帝 展 ), the successor to the Bunte. Since then he has been painting rural scenes in the vicinity of Kyoto.

In 1936 Ōta opened an art school under the name Murasakino yōga kenkyūjo ( 紫 野 洋 画 研究所 ), and the following year he became a leading member of the artists' association Kahō-kai ( 華 畝 会 ). In 1947 Ōta became a professor at the Kyoto Municipal Art School ( 京都 市立 美術 専 門 学校 Kyōto shiritsu bijutsu semmon gakkō ), resigned in 1950 and died unexpectedly in 1951 after a stroke.

In 2012, the Japanese Post issued an 80-Yan postage stamp within the series "60 Years of the National Museum of Modern Art Tokyo and 50 Years of the National Museum of Modern Art Kyoto ", which contained the painting Ōtas with the title "Reading at the window" ( 窓 辺 読 書 Madogiwa dokusho ) shows.
