The Ōu Mountains ( Japanese 奥 羽 山脈 , Ōu-sanmyaku ) is a mountain range in Japan in the Tōhoku region on Honshū .
At 500 km, the mountain range is the longest in Japan. It begins on the Natsudomari peninsula in the north in Aomori prefecture , then runs as the border between the prefectures Akita and Iwate as well as Yamagata and Miyagi , to the Nasu volcanoes in the south of Fukushima prefecture . Despite its length, the mountain range is only 35 km wide. The highest point is Mount Iwate at 2038 m .
Surname
The mountains formed the border between the former provinces Ōshū ( 奥州 ) and Ushū ( 羽州 ), from whose name that of the mountains was derived.
geology
The mountains began to form in the Pliocene . It lies over the center of the inner arch of the northeastern Japanese arch. This is the result of the subduction of the Pacific plate under the North American plate . A chain of volcanoes that formed in the Quaternary form the volcanic front.
