Şalcı Şöhret

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Şalcı Şöhret (died 1925 or 1926 in Erzurum ) was an ordinary Turkish widow. She was the first woman in the Republic of Turkey to be executed in Erzurum in 1925 or 1926 and was also the only woman to be executed for violating the hat law .

Şalcı Şöhret ("Schalmacherin Şöhret") was also called "Şalcı Bacı" ("Sister Schalmacherin"). Her husband died in the Turkish Liberation War . To support her two sons, she sold homemade scarves and stockings at the local market or as a peddler .

One day acquaintances informed her that her sons were throwing stones at the local governor's residence in protest against the hat law. When she rushed to find her sons, mistakenly believing that the police had locked up her children, she lost control and attacked the police with her wooden clogs . She ranted loudly about the newfangled hats of the officials. According to other sources, she is said to have said that as a woman, she had nothing to do with hats. Şöhret was arrested, tried by an independence court and sentenced to death . When she got the last word in the courtroom, Şöhret only explained where there was something like that that women were being executed. The events in Erzurum after the hat law was passed are mentioned in particular by the Kemalist historiography Erzurum Hadisesi (Incidents in Erzurum).

Şalcı Şöhret was hanged together with 22 men in 1926 . The execution took place in public. Since Şöhret was a woman, a sack of flour was pulled over her head in order not to expose her to the eyes of the audience and to reduce possible reactions.

The bodies were buried in a mass grave. 13 years later the grave was opened and the relatives of the victims were allowed to receive the remains. However, the son, who was now a butcher, was afraid of persecution and stayed away from the procedure. So Şalcı Şöhrets body was buried in the village of Tuzcu.
