The Šach Synagogue in Holešov ( German Holleschau ), a town in Okres Kroměříž in the Czech Republic , was built in the 16th century. The derelict synagogue has been a protected cultural monument since 1958 .
History and description
One of the largest Jewish communities in Moravia once existed in Holešov . The synagogue, originally built in 1560, was enlarged by an extension in 1615. Around 1725/35 it was redesigned in the Baroque style. In the middle of the prayer room is the wrought iron decorated bima . The women's gallery can be reached via a steep staircase ; the room was originally used as a school. The wooden ceiling is decorated with floral, fruit and animal motifs.
The name of the synagogue comes from the local rabbi Šabtaj ha-Kohen , short name Šach .
Todays use
The synagogue, renovated in the 1990s, houses the Moravian-Jewish Museum.
