economy

In the past, mainly dried fish, charcoal and incense were exported to Africa and India. An experimental farm was established in Rahab on the mainland to test the cultivation of fruit, vegetables and certain grasses. If the project is successful, the previously less fertile areas of the country could be at least partially used for agriculture.

Attractions

  • In the Wilaya there are some archaeological sites from pre-Islamic times.
  • The Ḥallāniyyāt Islands are breeding grounds for many migratory birds.
  • During the Charif , nutrient-rich cold water is washed from the bottom of the ocean to the surface, which is responsible for the abundance of fish in these waters. There is also a considerable population of dolphins and sea turtles use the islands to lay their eggs.
