The Żółta Karczma (German: Yellow Tavern ) is a former inn on the Warsaw Aleja Wilanowska . The historic building in neo-renaissance style is now a museum.

history

The inn was built in 1846 on a hill (a spur of the Warsaw Vistula embankment in Mokotów ) based on a design by Franciszek Maria Lanci . It is located on the east side of the two-lane Aleja Wilanowska, about opposite the confluence of the smaller Ulica Dominikańska . The builders were the owners of the Wilanów estate , who owned the Służewski estate here, to which the ensemble belonged. The house was leased to the restaurant operator, who mainly catered for travelers on the Warsaw- Piaseczno route . The beautifully situated restaurant was called "Belle Vue" (German: beautiful view ). An inventory list from 1860 shows that the large guest room was on the ground floor, which was equipped with a tiled stove made of white tiles and five tables and benches. The bedrooms were upstairs. In the western part of the garden there were fruit trees and a wooden pavilion.

Over time, the owners changed frequently. From 1902 it was the seat of a hunting dog breed. Insurgents occupied the building during the Warsaw Uprising . After the Second World War it was hardly used anymore. Local residents called it "Stara Wieża" (German: Old Tower ). Frequently changing tenants did not care about the maintenance of the property. In 1966 the building was nationalized. In the mid-1980s, the ensemble was renovated at the behest of the Polish Ministry of Culture. The Museum of the History of the Polish Peasant Movement has been located here since 1984 .

The former inn has an irregular floor plan and has a two-story structure. Previously there was an elongated carriage shed in the east and a courtyard surrounded by a wall. A narrow square tower with a flat roof towers over the building by around 2 meters. The usable area of the main house is 270 square meters. The style of the property resembles a Tuscan Renaissance villa . The building was placed under monument protection on December 9, 1971 (register number 533).
