Ștefan Barbu (born March 2, 1908 in Arad , Austria-Hungary , † June 30, 1970 ) was a Romanian football player . In order to avoid confusion with a surname cousin, he was listed in the Romanian sports press as Barbu II . He played 77 games in the highest Romanian soccer league, Divizia A , and took part in the 1930 World Cup.

Career

Ștefan Barbu began playing football in his hometown of Arad at Olympia Arad in 1920 and joined local rivals Gloria Arad a year later . This merged in 1922 with the established in 1921 CFR Arad to Gloria CFR Arad where Barbu from 1925 belonged to the first team and he remained true to the 1929th After two seasons at Olympia Arad, he returned to Gloria CFR in 1932 to make his debut in the newly founded Romanian professional league, Divizia A , on September 11, 1932 when he beat România Cluj . In 1933 he moved to CFR Bucharest , which changed its name to Rapid Bucharest in December 1936 . Barbu played there until 1938 and celebrated his great success. He won two Romanian cups and was the top scorer in the 1935/36 season with 23 goals scored . After he was hardly used at Rapid, he left the club after the first half of the 1937/38 season . For the first half of the following season he joined Olimpia PTT Arad . In the second half of the season he tried a comeback in Divizia A , but did not get more than two inserts at Gloria Arad. Barbu ended his career in 1941 at the age of 33 after a season in Divizia B at Crișana Arad . He then worked as an arbitrator from 1942 to 1957. In 1958 he took over the office of club president at CFR Arad, which he held until his retirement.

National team

Barbu completed a total of 7 international matches for the Romanian national soccer team . He made his debut on June 19, 1927 against Poland . After the Football World Cup in Uruguay in 1930 , where it was used in both games, it was only considered once, in the international match against Bulgaria on October 12, 1930.
