The .22 short cartridge (also known as .22 short ) was mainly used in pistol sport shooting until 2004 .
designation
As a rule, cartridges in Germany are designated according to their caliber and case length. The correct term would be 5.6 x 10 mm R . In practice, however, one speaks only of .22 short or .22 short .
Constructive
It's rimfire ammunition . The firearm strikes the protruding hollow edge of the cartridge base, which contains the initial charge that ignites the remaining propellant powder.
history
The .22 short was developed in the USA based on the 6 mm Flobert . In 1857 the Smith & Wesson company brought out their first revolver, the Smith & Wesson No 1 , in this caliber. The original cartridge had a 1.9 gram bullet and a black powder charge of 0.26 grams.
It wasn't until 1927 that Remington brought a .22 briefly with corrosion-free ignition on the market. Until then, the squeezable ignition material in the edge of the case consisted of mercury , potassium chloride and sulphate-antimony, among other things . Due to the sulfur and chlorine compounds, these components caused considerable corrosion on the gun barrels.

The .22 cartridge briefly was used for the Olympic rapid fire pistol until 2004 . This discipline was changed to the caliber .22 lfB in 2005 . Today the .22 is almost not shot for a short time. For this purpose, some regional associations of the German Rifle Federation have introduced the old Olympic rapid fire pistol into their "List B".
