Lists on the subject

The .460 Steyr is a center fire cartridge from the weapons manufacturer Steyr Mannlicher , which was developed for sniper rifles . During the development, important features for the military, such as the penetration power of armor or a tracer, were not taken into account. The cartridge was presented for the first time in February 2004 at the ShotShow-2004 in Las Vegas together with the Steyr HS .50 .

The cartridge was designed by Horst Grillmayer in 2002, while the projectile was designed by Guido Wasser. Production started around 2004 together with the Steyr HS .460 .
The ammunition was developed for precision rifles for sport shooters, with the focus on the long range and bypassing the 12.7 × 99 mm NATO ( .50 BMG ) caliber , the use of which is prohibited in many European countries for non-official purposes. The ammunition can also be of interest to armies deployed abroad, which have been banned from using 12.7 mm ammunition for peacekeeping operations.

construction

The external shape of the .460 Steyr cartridge is very similar to cartridges in the 12.7 × 99 mm caliber, but has a shorter case and a narrower cartridge neck, which leads to increased gas pressure. The ballistic properties of the .460 Steyr and the 12.7 × 99 mm are largely similar.

The ammunition is also comparable to other special cartridges such as the .408 Chey Tac or the .416 Barrett, which were also developed as special calibres for precision rifles in order to be able to work over long distances.

Current legal situation

Although the cartridge was specially designed as a legal bypass of the 12.7 × 99 mm, it can still happen that the ammunition is banned in some states. The penetration power of armor steel, for example, serves as an assessment criterion.

Austria

In Austria, the Steyr HS .460 was classified as an anti-tank rifle or war material by the authorities. According to § 1 para. 1 lit. b War Material Ordinance, anti-tank rifles are to be regarded as war material. Littera d states that “ammunition for war material of lit. b. "are to be assigned to the war material. According to Section 17 of the Weapons Act 1996, the acquisition, import, possession, surrender and carrying of war material is prohibited.

An assessment of the ammunition was also carried out to classify the weapon. In addition to a projectile energy comparable to that of the 12.7 × 99 mm ammunition (both 15,000 joules ), the diameter of the cartridge base was listed, which is both the 12.7 × 99 mm and the , 42 mm. This supposedly allows the types of ammunition used to be changed quickly.

In a proceeding at the Administrative Court, the complaint complained, among other things, that the breakthrough performance resulting from the projectile energy was never checked by the authorities, but only assumed to be comparable. Furthermore, it was stated that the allegedly easy possibility of changing a weapon from .460 Steyr to 12.7 × 99 mm can only be done by exchanging the barrel and bolt, which was made technically impossible.
