Video games

The four-part .hack game series (.hack // Infection, .hack // Mutation, .hack // Outbreak, .hack // Quarantine) is a PlayStation 2 game series developed by Bandai from 2002. It is part of the .hack universe and continues the story of the .hack // SIGN anime series. Each of these games contained an episode of the .hack // Liminality OVA series.

The game itself is a single player role-playing game, but the action takes place in the huge MMORPG "The World". The player receives emails and can communicate with other "players" without having internet access himself .

On November 23, 2005, .hack // Fragment , an online game for .hack, was released in Japan , albeit not an MMORPG. A release outside of Japan is not yet open.

On May 18, 2006, the first part of the second .hack game series for the PlayStation 2 , called .hack // GU , was released in Japan , and on October 24, 2006 it was also released in North America.

The story of these games is based on the events of .hack // Roots. Similar to how .hack // SIGN was a prologue to the first game series, .hack // Roots also serves as a prologue to the .hack // GU series. In this game series, the story revolves around Haseo, a Playerkiller (PKK) killer who searches for the infamous Playerkiller (PK) Tri-Edge, whose victims are no longer able to log into The World after they die . A good friend of Haseo's, Shino, even fell into a coma six months prior to the game's plot, following an attack by the Tri-Edge. On his search, Haseo then comes across Azure Kite, which he thinks is the Tri-Edge because of its extravagant weapons. In the fight, however, he is hopelessly inferior and is defeated by Azure Kite, who then sets a data drain on him. As a result of this incident, Haseo's player level is lowered from 133 to 1, he loses all of his rare items and his contact list is also reset. This is exactly where the game begins, and the player takes control of Haseo to accompany him on his puzzling search for answers.

On September 24, 2017, an HD trilogy of the .hack // GU trilogy was announced as part of the Tokyo Game Show. This was published on November 1, 2017 under the title .hack // GU Last Recode in Japan and on November 3, 2017 in North America and Europe and contains the already known three parts Vol. 1 // Rebirth , Vol. 2 // Reminisce and Vol. 3 // Redempetion the previously unpublished part Vol. 4 // Reconnection . With .hack // GU Last Recode , a game from the // GU series was published in Europe for the first time.
