action
In 2007 the MMORPG The World is widespread and over 20 million players meet there virtually and experience adventures together. This virtual reality serves as the setting for the anime.
When the character Tsukasa wakes up in this game, he can't remember anything, and unlike the other virtual characters, he feels this virtual world to be real. He feels pain and smells and temperature. Soon he has to find out that he cannot leave the game and that he has special skills. Because of this, he is soon followed by the "Red Knights" (Crimson Knights), the self-appointed guardians of the game. He is also seen with a cat-like character who shouldn't exist. Players who cheat / hack are usually banned from online games.
When they find him, a fight ensues and a monster appears and protects Tsukasa. The attacking red knight is not only killed in the game, but also suffers an epileptic fit as a real player belonging to this character. All players are advised to stay away from Tsukasa and the monster, with another group already forging a plan to separate Tsukasa from the monster and arrest him.
However, Tsukasa also has friends who want to help clarify the situation. Together with Mimiru , Bear and others , he sets out to find answers to his condition and a solution for him. They hear about another rumor about a cheat item , the so-called Key of the Twilight . However, the hunt for this item also calls for enemies who would like to have this for themselves and want to use it against others or the world.
While searching for the key, they come across a programmed image of the creator of the game. This tells them in a cryptic way something about the awakening of a girl who is supposed to change the world. Tsukasa knows this girl who is in a secret place that only he knows.
