1.40m received mixed reviews. Marcel Menne from Plattentests.de rated the song rather negatively:
“Dramatic synths alternate with the prince's typically melancholy chanting, and whether a four-foot-wide bed is actually the best metaphor for youthful intimacy is doubtful. It is not surprising that the girls from our middle and high school in particular find this great in combination with the no less kitschy video, but one could expect more from Friedrich than such a cheap emotional show. "
Benjamin Weber from 1Live described the song as "unusually quiet" for Prince Pi. Maike Brülls from the Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung wrote in the context of the album review for Nothing new in the West that the 1.40m melody consists of “ballad, almost kitschy piano”.
