100 North Main Street , also Wells Fargo Center , formerly Wachovia Center , is a skyscraper in Winston-Salem , North Carolina . Designed in the postmodern style, the building is 140 meters (460 ft ) high and has 34 floors. The original name of the building was Wachovia Center, named after the US bank Wachovia , which used the skyscraper as its headquarters from its completion in 1995 to 2001, before moving it to Charlotte , North Carolina after the merger with First Union Bank . misplaced. Until the completion of the RBC Plaza in Raleigh in 2008, it was the tallest building in the Carolina States outside of Charlotte.

history

The building was built to serve as the Wachovia Bank's new global headquarters, which until now was located in what is now Winston Tower . Upon completion, it replaced Winston Tower as the tallest building in the city, then under the original name of Wachovia Center. It served as the headquarters until 2001 when Wachovia Bank and First Union Bank merged. After the completion of the merger, the company moved its headquarters to the One Wachovia Center in Charlotte , still under the name Wachovia . Wachovia then sold the Wachovia Center to American Financial Realty Trust in May 2004 for $ 39.6 million in a large-scale takeover of bank real estate valued at $ 546 million. Even after moving out and the subsequent sale, Wachovia continued to rent office space in the building.

On April 1, 2008, American Financial Realty Trust was bought by Gramercy Capital and the company also owns the building. The building was then sold to the current owner, SL Winston-Salem LLC, on October 23, 2008 for US $ 36 million.

Wachovia Bank, which has leased 17 floors in the building since 2009, was acquired by Wells Fargo on December 31, 2008 and ceased operations as an independent company in September 2011. It was not certain that Wells Fargo would continue to use office space at 100 North Main Street. The building's agent believed the building had a good chance, given the low rental prices, that Wells Fargo would continue to use office space for the activities resulting from the takeover.

In 2012, HFF sold the Wells Fargo Center for the 601W Companies. Wells Fargo occupies 65 percent of 100 North Main Street, with contracts that are for an additional 13 years. Remaining tenants include Deutsche Bank , Morgan Stanley Smith Barney , Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, and the US Department of Veterans Affairs .

architecture

The granite dome

The building was designed by the office of Argentine architect César Pelli in collaboration with Kendall / Heaton Associates Inc. The contractor was Spectrum Properties, the general contractor was HJ Russell & Company. It was built as the headquarters for Wachovia Bank. César Pelli himself described the building as his best, comparing it to the bud of a rose that is about to bloom. Local Moravian elements and influences flowed into the design , including Moravian arches for the dome , the main entrance and the Moravian Star for a marble mosaic in the lobby . The facade of the Wells Fargo Center is clad with white granite from a quarry in Sardinia . With its granite dome that houses the mechanics and is 17 meters (56 ft) high, the building is unique in the world. The grounds and gardens were designed by César Pelli's wife, Diana Balmori, a landscape architect.
