The 113Online Foundation (also known as 113 for short) is a Dutch health care institution for the prevention of suicides . People at risk of suicide in the Netherlands can contact psychologists or people who have been trained in these matters around the clock by phone (0900-0113) and by email and chat. The callers remain completely anonymous.

history

The foundation was founded in 2009 by the psychiatrist Jan Mokkenstorm , who still heads the foundation today. Initially, the initiative was supported by the Dutch Ministry of Health ( Ministerie van Volksgezondheid, Welzijn en Sport , VWS for short) in the expectation that the insurance company community would provide further funding. However, the insurers saw legal hurdles for the reimbursement of costs for anonymous assistance. The foundation is now financed, among other things, by grants from the Ministry of Health. Minister Schippers intends to increase the amount to 3.4 million euros in 2018 so that 113Online can expand its activities.

organization

People at risk of suicide who report to 113Online first get to one of the 160 or so volunteers. In addition, 113Online employs psychologists , orthopedists (a Dutch form of special education ) and psychiatrists who support the volunteers and take on further discussions. This professional support is limited in time, but can be continued after referral by the family doctor to practicing specialists.

In addition to direct help, the foundation also offers training for carers, as well as support for neighbors and relatives. 113Online has meanwhile become an expert center in the field of suicide. The foundation, which operates across the Netherlands, has its headquarters in Amsterdam .

numbers

According to the company, there are 40 to 60 people every day who report to 113Online with suicidal intent. The number of callers fluctuates periodically; Calls increase especially around the festive season in December, but also after famous people committed suicide ( Werther effect ). 113Online has the goal of reducing the number of suicides to 800 per year by 2030, compared to the around 1,850 suicides that occurred in the Netherlands in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

In 2016, around 250 people worked voluntarily or as employees at 113Online, who this year made a total of 11,029 telephone calls (previous year: 9,453) and 20,886 chats (2015: 12,597) with people at risk of suicide. The website was visited 369,815 times (2015: 256,045). For 2017, 113Online had a budget of almost five million euros.
