In chemistry, the trinitrophenols form a group of aromatic compounds that are derived from both phenol and nitrobenzene . The structure consists of a benzene ring with an attached hydroxyl group (-OH) and three nitro groups (-NO 2 ) as substituents . Their different arrangement results in six constitutional isomers with the empirical formula C 6 H 3 N 3 O 7 , of which 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (picric acid) is by far the most important.
