21-39 Hyndland Road
A row of residential buildings is located at 21-39 Hyndland Road in the Scottish city of Glasgow . In 1970 it was included as an individual monument in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.
history
Construction of the complex, based on a design by the eminent Scottish architect Alexander Thomson , began in 1871. When Thomson's health deteriorated in 1873, Robert Turnbull took over parts of his duties. After Thomson's death in 1875, only four of the buildings were completed. Turnbull continued the work and finished it around 1881.
At an unspecified point in time in the 1920s, the buildings were divided into apartments. The work was planned by William James Smith . The building complex has been the subject of three printed specialist publications since it was founded.
description
The row of buildings is on Hyndland Road behind Belhaven-Westbourne Church . The classically designed row of buildings has three floors. Each individual building is two axes wide. The only exceptions are the three axes wide final homes, unable to withdraw their upper floors, and so the appearance of projections awaken. The entrance doors on the right are set deep into the facades. They are each designed with two Ionic columns, narrow flanking windows and simple combat windows. On the left there are elongated triplet windows . On the set-back upper floors, canted oriels emerge on the left . Antefixes decorate their flat ends. On the second floor there is a band of five low windows in each building. The two final buildings on the first floor are not designed with bay windows, but with three windows with architraves and simple cornices . The final gable roofs are covered with slate. Different dormer windows emerge on houses 29 to 39 .
