The 21st World Scout Jamboree 2007 took place in the summer of 2007 and was part of the celebrations for the 100th anniversary of the Scout Movement . The camp site in England was chosen because of its proximity to the location of the first Boy Scout camp (1907 on Brownsea Island near Poole ) and the World Scout Center at Gilwell Park in London . The jamboree was held for twelve days between July 27th and August 8th in Hylands Park , Chelmsford , Essex .

Around 38,000 scouts from 158 national associations recognized by the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) took part in the camp.

Purpose of the Jamborees

The first jamboree took place in 1920 at Kensington Olympia in London. Since then, they have been held every four years, interrupted only between 1937 and 1947 due to the Second World War and between 1975 and 1983 due to the political instability in Iran . The camps took place in many countries around the world, but never before in Africa .

The Jamboree should enable adventure and promote international friendships and the development of young people .

participation

Participation in the 21st Jamboree was open to all members of WOSM member organizations between the ages of 14 and 17 (the deadline is July 27, 2007) as well as members of the same age from member organizations of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts , if the national WOSM member organization of the Participation agrees. The costs for participation were based on the classification of the respective country in income groups. European participants had to raise a four-digit euro amount, while participants from poorer countries, especially Africa, could participate for a few hundred dollars on the same terms. Due to the different economic strength, this sum is relativized, so that the economic burden for the participants was roughly comparable.

In addition to the young people, a large number of adults took part, on the one hand as a squad leader to look after and support the young people, on the other hand as part of the International Service Team (IST) or the Jamboree Organizing Team (JOT) / Jamboree Delivery Team (JDT) for a diverse range Program. Each national association could choose which of its members could travel to the Jamboree.

Day visitors of all ages could also visit the site for a fee and on certain days. For reasons of the protection of personal belongings, access to the individual subcamps, i.e. the area in which the participants live and cook, is prohibited for day visitors, but they can otherwise participate in all program activities on the premises.

The 21st Jamboree was not the biggest scout camp so far, in 1929 in Birkenhead over 50,000 scouts took part in the Coming of the Age Jamboree . But since the large number of day visitors significantly increased the number of participants, it is the largest scouting event since the movement began in 1907.

motto

The motto was One World, One Promise (one world, one promise). It refers to the worldwide spread of the scout movement and the scout promise as a common basis for all scouts.

song

From June 18, 2007, the official jamboree song Jambo was available on CD and as a download. The organizers' goal was to get the song to number one on the UK charts. The income from this was passed on to the WOSM.

activities

Some of the main activities:

  • World Village : A large area dedicated to the World Village where the participants could experience creativity, technology or cultures.
  • The Gilwell Adventure : Adventurous and challenging activities in Gilwell Park
  • Global Development Village : Together with experts from the UN and other organizations, some of the most important problems facing humanity can be discussed and dealt with in workshops.
  • Starburst : On one day, the participants in various projects outside the site were supposed to improve the living conditions of the people in the surrounding areas. An example of this was clearing a six-mile-long railway line from debris and overgrowth, at the end of which was a ride in a real steam locomotive .
  • SPLASH! : The participants were taken to the Alton Water Reservoir for one day to take part in various activities on the subject of water. Whether sailing, canoeing or water polo depended solely on the personal preferences of the participants.

Dress rehearsal EuroJam

As a dress rehearsal for the Jamboree, the EuroJam 2005 was held at the same storage location in 2005 . 10,000 scouts took part in this camp. The organization of the jamborees was tested in practice, for example the influence of these crowds on the environment and the care of the participants.

For example, the world's largest internet order was placed at a supermarket; the delivery was finally made by several trucks with trailers. Should the organizers of the Jamboree 2007 decide to order again via the Internet, this record would be broken again.

After the jamboree

After the departure of the participants on August 8, the organizers had until August 15, 2007 to restore the park to its original state. Then it was handed over to the organizers of the V-Festival.
